The Latest Detailed Guide to Edamame Planting Time and Methods
Edamame, also known as vegetable soybean, is rich in nutrients and is cultivated throughout our country, but due to climate differences between north and south, its planting time varies slightly. So when is edamame suitable for planting? What are the planting methods? Let's take a look together at Qinnong Network to learn about edamame's planting time and methods.
Planting Time
There are many edamame varieties, and different varieties adapt to different environments, so planting times all vary. Early-maturing varieties are planted in spring, when temperatures are relatively low, so seedling raising through sowing is needed, generally sowing in February-March, transplanting by the end of March, and harvesting in June-July. Mid-maturing varieties are planted in summer, and can be directly sown in April-May, with harvest in July-August; late-maturing varieties are planted in autumn, direct-seeded in June-July, with harvest in September-October. In southern regions, planting can also be delayed, sowing in July-August and harvesting in September-November.
Planting Methods
1. Soil Selection and Land Preparation
Choose fertile, deep, well-drained soil plots. In the previous winter, deep-plow the soil and use sunlight to bleach the soil white, which can eliminate part of the pathogens in the soil. Before sowing, apply sufficient base fertilizer together with land preparation, using farmyard manure combined with organic fertilizer.
2. Sowing
The sowing method uses hill sowing, placing 4-5 seeds per hill, with about 6000-7000 hills per mu. When sowing, maintain reasonable close planting; it should not be too sparse or too dense. After sowing, cover with soil promptly, and note that the soil should not be too deep. Edamame seeds are relatively large, and after emergence the seedlings have poor soil-pushing strength, so sowing should be appropriately shallow, preferably covering with about 2 cm of soil. Two days after covering with soil, spray a herbicide once to prevent diseases from threatening seedling growth.
3. Field Management
Phosphorus and potassium fertilizers have an obvious yield-increasing effect on edamame, so more phosphorus and potassium fertilizers should be applied. When fertilizing, base fertilizer should be primary and topdressing supplementary. If phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are insufficient, plant growth is slow and leaves show yellowing symptoms. When edamame has grown to a certain extent, pinching the growing tips can not only prevent excessive vegetative growth, but also promote early maturity and increase yield. Pinching is generally done during the flowering period.
The above is the edamame planting time and methods brought to you by Qinnong Network. Edamame has relatively good disease resistance and generally only suffers from insect pests, so attention should be paid during the planting process.
