A Detailed Guide to the Latest Planting Time and Methods for Fiddlehead Fern
The fiddlehead fern was formerly a wild plant, that is, a kind of what people call a wild vegetable, but now that the nutritional value of the fiddlehead fern has been discovered, and with the current advocacy of green and environmentally friendly foods, the fiddlehead fern is loved by more and more people, and there has even appeared the phenomenon of large-scale fiddlehead fern cultivation. Today let us learn together how the fiddlehead fern is planted and when it is suitable to plant it.
Planting Time
The fiddlehead fern is a relatively popular seasonal vegetable nowadays. In fact, the fiddlehead fern can be planted throughout the year, only that the yield is very small at ordinary times, so generally no one plants it. The best planting time for the fiddlehead fern is spring and autumn each year, that is, the periods of March and April and September each year. Fiddlehead ferns planted in spring are generally harvested in June and July each year, while fiddlehead ferns planted in September generally begin to be harvested from November and December, and can be harvested again in June and July each year. Generally, the fiddlehead fern can be harvested for ten to twenty years.
Planting Methods
1. Site selection and land preparation
The fiddlehead fern is relatively suited to growing in acidic soil, so we generally choose relatively flat mountain land with relatively thick soil layers and relatively loose and fertile soil for fiddlehead fern planting. When preparing the land, we try to plow the land deeply, then make the soil a bit finer, and finally make ridges and open furrows, which is conducive to water diversion and drainage and irrigation later. When preparing the land, we should also pay attention to applying base fertilizer well, generally applying compound fertilizer and farmyard manure.
2. Planting
There are two planting methods. The first is sexual reproduction, that is, collecting the seeds of the fiddlehead fern, then sowing and raising seedlings, and finally transplanting. The second method is asexual reproduction, that is, wild fiddlehead ferns or fiddlehead ferns planted by others will grow new seedlings every spring and autumn. At this time, the new seedlings can be moved out together with the roots, and then planted at certain intervals (generally 60-70 cm between each plant). In our ordinary planting, the asexual reproduction planting method is the one most commonly used.
3. Field management
After the fiddlehead fern is planted, if there is no rain and the land is relatively dry, the fiddlehead fern must be watered, generally once every three days. During the growth period of the fiddlehead fern, intertillage, weeding and fertilization must be carried out frequently. The amount of fertilizer applied each time should not be very large; a little topdressing during each weeding is enough. Around Qingming there is relatively more rain, so during that period attention should be paid to going to the field to drain water, to avoid root rot of the fiddlehead fern caused by too much water. After each harvest, fertilizer can be applied once, which can promote the growth of new fiddlehead ferns. Finally, when winter comes each year, a layer of leaves or rice straw should be used to cover the fiddlehead fern, which can play a role in keeping warm and at the same time can promote the growth of seedlings. Field management each year should be done as carefully as possible, which can extend the service life of the fiddlehead fern.
4. Harvesting
When the fiddlehead fern seedlings grow to twenty to forty cm, the first harvest can be carried out. During harvesting, note that not all of them can be harvested; generally about two-thirds are harvested. Fertilize after harvesting, and according to the normal growth rate of the fiddlehead fern, it can generally be harvested again after about ten more days or so, and it can be harvested three to four times a year.
