Why Pumpkins Only Bloom but Don't Set Fruit: Causes and Solutions

General News By Sophie Bennett 0 views
When I lived in the countryside, I always heard many people discussing how their pumpkins had bloomed a lot of flowers but never seemed to set any fruit. Why is that? Some elderly people who had grown pumpkins for years would tell them some old tricks to solve the problem of pumpkins not setting fruit. If those still didn't work, the pumpkin vines would be picked to cook as a dish. Today, I'm going to tell everyone why pumpkins fail to set fruit and teach you a few simple solutions.

Causes of Not Setting Fruit

If you don't have a good understanding of how to grow pumpkins, it can very likely lead to pumpkins only blooming without setting fruit. The causes of this phenomenon are actually quite simple: insufficient light, too high a density, improper fertilizing, and insufficient pollination, among other factors. If these conditions don't reach the level that pumpkins need, they won't set fruit, or even if they do set fruit, the fruit will die before it can reach maturity.

Solutions

1. Pinch off the growing tips at the right time

If you don't pinch off the growing tips of a pumpkin, it will keep growing with just one vine. So to increase pumpkin yield and prevent the phenomenon of only blooming without setting fruit, you need to pinch off the growing tips. Generally, when the vine grows to two or three meters, you pinch off the top of the vine. Usually after three to five days, it will grow several new branches, and eventually these will flower and set fruit. Then when the branches grow to a certain extent, you do the same thing, gradually turning the branches into new main vines, and the new vines will flower and set fruit, and so on.

2. Set up a trellis in time

In many rural areas, pumpkins are basically grown sprawling on the ground. When the vines grow on the ground, the density is relatively high, and they all pile up together, so light penetration is very poor, leading to insufficient light and preventing photosynthesis, which ultimately results in this failure to set fruit. So when the seedlings grow to two or three meters, you should build some frames for them and let them grow along the frames, improving the fruit-setting rate by enhancing light and ventilation.

3. Prevent excessive vegetative growth

During the growth of pumpkin vines, you can't let them keep growing vegetatively, because then they will absorb a lot of nutrients and focus only on vine growth while forgetting to set fruit. So when the vines grow to a certain extent, we need to take measures to slow down their growth. The usual method is to cut a small slit 30 to 40 cm from the base of the vine, then put a little charcoal into it.

4. Assist pollination

Pumpkin flowers are divided into male flowers and female flowers. Fruit setting is generally determined by the female flowers, but many times the male flowers on the vine outnumber the female flowers, and the female flowers are also often damaged. So first we need to protect the flowers, and then carry out hand pollination. This way, every little flower can be put to use, while also improving pollination efficiency and the success rate of pollination.

5. Remove yellow leaves

If you find that a small pumpkin has already formed on the vine, at this time we should promptly remove the yellow leaves next to this small pumpkin, and at the same time remove one fifth of the male flowers next to this small pumpkin. This can reduce the absorption of nutrients from the soil by the vine's leaves and male flowers, so that the nutrients are all supplied to the small pumpkin and its growth is promoted.

6. Fertilizing method

A very important factor in pumpkin fruit setting is fertilizing. Many people don't really understand fertilizing methods and just fertilize randomly. For pumpkin growth, the best option is generally to use farmyard manure. When the fruit is setting, apply a little potassium fertilizer or phosphate fertilizer, and use as little nitrogen fertilizer as possible or none at all, because nitrogen fertilizer only promotes the growth rate of the vines and also lowers the fruit-setting rate.
