Tomato is a common fruit vegetable for us, and its sweet-and-sour taste is loved by many people. As its market demand grows, its planting area is increasing year by year. Many people inevitably run into many problems when growing it, and among them many growers suffer greatly from tomato stem rot. So what is going on here? And how should it be controlled? Come with Qinnongwang to look at the causes of tomato stem rot and the control methods.

Cause 1: Improper watering and high soil moisture

Although tomatoes need a large amount of water during growth, each watering should not be excessive; keeping the soil moist is enough. Too much watering causes waterlogging, which leads to overly low ground temperature and poor soil permeability, thereby causing root rot and stem rot.

Control method: When planting, choose loose soil with good drainage. Tomatoes have different water requirements at each growth stage, so watering should be done scientifically. Watering can be frequent, but each watering should not be excessive. If too much water is applied or soil moisture is high, the tomato's light duration can be increased, using the transpiration of the leaves to evaporate excess water.

Cause 2: Low temperature

The best temperature for tomato planting and growth is 20-30 degrees. Below 13 degrees its growth slows down; being at below 13 degrees for a long time causes poor growth and development; below 6 degrees the plant suffers freezing damage, leading to stem rot.

Control method: This phenomenon mainly occurs in cold northern regions and rarely occurs in southern regions. If the temperature is too low, greenhouse technology can be used to continue raising and preserving heat, keeping the temperature above 15 degrees.

Cause 3: Large day-night temperature difference

The suitable growth temperature for tomatoes is between 25-28 degrees during the day and between 16-20 degrees at night. When the day-night temperature difference is large, it damages the roots and causes the plant to wilt and the stem to rot.

Control method: This situation mainly occurs in southern regions in late spring and early summer, when daytime temperatures are high and nighttime temperatures are low, very easily causing problems for the plant. If the daytime temperature is too high, shading can be used; at night, artificial heating can be used or the plants can be grown in a greenhouse.

Cause 4: Diseases

If the seeds and soil are not disinfected before planting, or if there is long-term continuous cropping, pathogens in the soil multiply. These pathogens easily cause tomato diseases such as bacterial wilt and fusarium wilt, and these diseases all cause stem rot in the plant.

Control method: Disinfect the seeds and soil before planting; when diseased plants are found, pull them out promptly and burn them, and spread quicklime or plant ash on the soil to disinfect and sterilize it, and apply pesticides for treatment.

The above is Qinnongwang's introduction to the causes of tomato stem rot and the control methods. I believe everyone now has some understanding of the causes of tomato stem rot, and Qinnongwang has also brought you the related control methods. We hope it can help you.
