Many people may not know what water bamboo is, but it has another name: gaosun, a name we are very familiar with. Gaosun is an asexually propagated aquatic perennial root grass-family crop, planted in paddy fields or ponds just like rice. Below, Qinnong Web brings you its cultivation techniques. Let's take a look.

1. Seed Selection and Seedling Raising

When selecting seeds, you can choose late-maturing, high-yielding double-cropping varieties, or early-marketing, high-yielding single-cropping varieties, depending on your own market conditions and local environment. Because water bamboo is asexually propagated, there is no conventional sowing and seedling-raising method; instead, old water bamboo clumps are divided into smaller clumps for planting. Select clumps that are strong-growing, disease-free, and free of male plants, and use a knife to cut their small mud-covered water bamboo root clumps as seed stock, generally more than one thousand per mu.

2. Land Preparation

Choose a paddy field or shallow pond as the planting site, plow the soil deeply and let it sun-bleach, and rough-plow it to make it loose. Water bamboo has a high fertilizer demand for growth, so sufficient base fertilizer should be applied to achieve high yields. Base fertilizer can mainly be organic fertilizer or farmyard manure; try not to apply chemical fertilizer. After fertilizing, plow the soil deeply again to mix the soil and fertilizer evenly, then irrigate and rake it level. Then reinforce and raise the field ridges. Water bamboo needs a certain water layer during growth, but the water layer should not exceed 20cm at its highest.

3. Transplanting

Transplant the prepared seed stock in October-November. Transplanting is generally done mainly in rows, with a row spacing of 0.8-1 m and a plant spacing of 0.5-0.6 m. Pay attention to the depth when planting; if planted too deep, tillering will not be vigorous. Generally, the best depth is when the old stems and the base of the water bamboo seedlings are inserted into the mud without floating up.

4. Field Management

Field management mainly includes water and fertilizer management, weeding, and pest and disease control. Water bamboo has different water requirements at each growth stage. At the early growth stage, the water demand is not large; at the peak growth stage, the water demand is greater, so sufficient water must be ensured; and at the later stage, the water demand decreases. Topdressing should be applied according to growth conditions. When fertilizing, be careful not to apply fertilizer directly under the water bamboo seedlings; it should be 2-3cm away from the seedlings to avoid excessive fertilizer concentration causing seedling burn. During the planting process, weeds should also be removed promptly to improve soil aeration and avoid nutrient consumption, generally weeding 2-3 times. The main diseases of water bamboo are leaf blight and rust, and the pests are leafhoppers and aphids. Attention should be paid to control measures.

The above is the water bamboo cultivation technique brought to you by Qinnong Web. Well-grown and stable water bamboo can reach a yield of 1500kg per mu. Calculated at a market price of about 6-8 yuan per kg, the profit per mu can reach around ten thousand, making it a fairly good planting project.
