Luffa is a vegetable that everyone loves to eat, and it contains a rich supply of nutrients such as protein and vitamins. Eating more luffa can fight aging, and it also has benefits such as preventing scurvy, boosting brain function and beautifying the skin. So how is such a wonderful luffa grown? Below, the editor gives a simple introduction to growing luffa.

1. Choosing and Preparing the Land

The land for growing luffa should ideally be fertile, deep, well-drained, neutral sandy soil with a pH of around 7. Poor, thin soil is not suitable for luffa growth. Before planting, spread 80-90 kg of lime powder to adjust the soil pH. Avoid soil that is too acidic or too alkaline.

2. Timely Transplanting

The most suitable weather for transplanting luffa is a sunny day. Before sowing, plow the soil to a depth of about 15-20 cm and apply base fertilizer. Apply as much fertilizer as the size of the land requires; generally, use about 3000 kg of farmyard manure, plus 100 kg of superphosphate and 28 kg of urea. Build the land into rows of beds, planting about 3000 plants per mu.

3. Building the Trellis

Growing luffa requires building a trellis, which can be based on wooden stakes or concrete foundations. The trellis should not be too low, because luffa is a climbing vine, so it should be over 2 m high. The luffa trellis should be made in a semicircular or triangular shape, able to bear the weight of mature gourds and withstand the battering of heavy rain.

4. Fertilizer and Water Management

Luffa needs plenty of fertilizer in the early stage of growth, starting with the base fertilizer. Apply a heavy fertilizer once at the early fruiting stage, and another heavy fertilizer during the fruiting period; the fertilizer can be compound fertilizer, phosphorus-potassium fertilizer or farmyard manure. During the fruiting period, luffa needs more carbon, so apply a little more carbon-containing fertilizer, in order to prevent premature aging of the luffa.

5. Field Management

When the luffa vines grow to about 30 cm and 65 cm, press the vines. On a sunny day, open a small furrow in the field, press the vines into the furrow and cover them with soil; on a rainy day, press them directly onto the soil to prevent the vines from rotting in the water. When guiding the vines onto the trellis, generally wait until male flowers appear before starting; after they are on the trellis, guide the vines in a zigzag pattern. Remove dead and diseased leaves as appropriate; when the leaves grow too densely, thin them evenly at each position to maintain ventilation and light penetration.

6. Timely Harvesting

Luffa has a strong ability to bear fruit continuously, and it bears fruit very quickly in summer. If the care and management of the luffa are done well, it can bear fruit once every 3-4 days. The best time to pick is in the morning, but be careful not to pull with your hands; it is best to cut the gourd off with scissors, which avoids breaking the vines.

Luffa is actually a very easy vegetable to grow, with strong drought resistance, fast fruiting and strong continuity of fruiting. However, in day-to-day management, you still need to pay attention to fertilizer and water.
