Broad bean is also called Luohan bean. It is a crop grown for food, feed and fertilizer all at once. It is rich in protein, vitamin B1, B2 and other nutrients. It is effective in treating stomach and intestinal discomfort and edema. It is also processed into many industrial food products for sale. Today, the editor brings you the planting methods for broad beans.

1. Seed selection and sowing

When choosing broad bean seeds, you should select high-yielding, disease-free, superior seeds. Before sowing, the land should be dug deep and plowed so that the soil becomes loose, which helps the roots expand and sprout and form root nodules; then inoculating with rhizobia can increase yield. You can use the soil inoculation method by taking about 100 jin of soil from soil where broad beans have been grown and sprinkling it in the furrows at sowing time.

2. Seedling stage management

At the seedling stage, pay attention to the condition of the seedlings and adopt corresponding control methods according to the seedling condition. After sowing, cover with soil, then cover with rice straw to maintain temperature and humidity. At the mid-growth stage, do a good job of pest and disease control, handle affected plants, remove diseased and residual plant material and weeds, and destroy them centrally. Spray pesticides to control pests, diseases and rodents, control moisture well, and tidy the branches and seedlings. Ensure the normal development of the plants. In the later stage, ensure the plants' water needs, control the density well, and maintain good ventilation and light penetration in the field.

3. Topdressing and watering

After sowing, irrigate promptly to maintain the needed moisture, which can promote earlier sprouting and emergence. After sowing, compact the soil to prevent lodging once the plants grow taller. When young leaves appear, you can appropriately apply a small amount of nitrogen fertilizer as topdressing; during the growth period, apply phosphorus and potassium fertilizers as topdressing in stages. When pods are forming, apply more trace elements, which can reduce flower and pod drop and achieve a high yield. In the early stage, the main thing is still to ensure drainage and ventilation, otherwise it will cause flowers and pods to drop and beans to shrivel.

4. Intertillage and pruning

After emergence, check promptly; if missing seedlings are found, replant immediately. At the seedling stage, cultivate and weed frequently, pat the soil firm and thick to prevent lodging. Around the flowering period, pay more attention to the branching of the plants; broad bean branches are difficult to pod, so excess branches should be cut off so the main stem can absorb more nutrients, increase the pod-setting rate and improve plumpness.

5. Timely harvesting

When harvesting broad beans, you can do it in batches, from bottom to top, about once a week. You can save some mature seeds; when the leaves fall, pick the pods from the middle and lower parts, dry them in the sun, then open the pods and store the broad beans.

Of course, many pests and diseases also appear during the growth of broad beans, which I did not discuss in detail in this article. The most important thing is still to pay more attention to temperature and humidity, as temperature and humidity are the main factors affecting flower and pod drop in broad beans.
