When spinach is grown through the summer, as long as it is managed properly, it can often bring excellent economic returns, but during this process, plant death often occurs, and in severe cases all the spinach in an entire greenhouse plot dies, causing huge economic losses for farmers. So what causes spinach plant death? How should it be controlled? Let's take a look together with Qinong Net.

1. Damping-off

Damping-off is one of the causes of spinach plant death in summer cultivation. It can infect the plants from the emergence of seedlings all the way through to the harvest period. After spinach seedlings emerge, once disturbed by damping-off, the leaves first begin to wilt, and as the disease develops, the roots of the seedlings begin to rot, and the plants lodge and die. After adult plants are infected, the leaves begin to turn yellow, until later the stems turn black, rot, and die.

Control methods: When planting, choose seeds with strong disease resistance, then disinfect the seeds, and at the same time plow the soil deeply. Remove diseased plant residues, disinfect the soil, and after the disease occurs, use a 1000-fold dilution of 20% tolclofos-methyl emulsifiable concentrate as a soil drench for control.

2. Fusarium wilt

Fusarium wilt easily causes plant death in adult plants. After spinach is infected by the pathogen, the leaves begin to darken and lose their luster, the leaf mesophyll tissue gradually turns yellow, and finally the roots dry up, turn brown, and die. In the early stage of this disease, the plants show obvious stunting and slow growth; especially in summer cultivation, under the environment of high temperature and high humidity, after the disease occurs the plants wilt, yellow, and die at a very rapid rate.

Control methods: The early prevention methods are the same as for damping-off. After the disease occurs, a 1000-fold dilution of chlorobromoisocyanuric acid solution can be used as a soil drench for control.

3. Heart rot

Heart rot mainly harms the stem base and heart leaves of spinach, and after the disease occurs it very easily leads to spinach plant death. At sowing time, if the seeds have not been disinfected, they are very easily infected after germination, and after the seedlings emerge, the stem base begins to discolor and constrict, and finally dies and rots, causing plant death.

Control methods: Be sure to disinfect the seeds before planting to ensure that the seedlings can emerge very quickly. After the disease occurs, a 1000-fold dilution of 25% azoxystrobin suspension concentrate or a 1000-fold dilution of 50% iprodione wettable powder can be sprayed for control.

4. Rainwater irrigation

Summer is inherently a season of high temperature and frequent rain. When spinach is grown through the summer, it must absolutely not be irrigated by rainwater; once it is irrigated by rainwater, plant death very easily occurs.

Control methods: Therefore, during summer cultivation, preventive measures against rainwater must be taken well, and rainwater must not be allowed to irrigate the plants.
