During the growing process, ginger is susceptible to a variety of pests and diseases, which seriously affect the yield and quality of ginger and reduce the income of growers. However, some growers are unfamiliar with the symptoms of these pests and diseases and their control methods, and are at a loss after being affected by them. Let's take a look together below at the control methods for common ginger pests and diseases.

1. Ginger blast

Ginger blast is one of the main diseases of ginger. After infection, ginger generally suffers a yield reduction of 20%-30%, and in severe cases up to 80%, causing enormous damage. This disease mainly affects the rhizome of ginger. When it occurs, water-soaked lesions appear on the affected part; as the disease develops, the lesions turn yellowish-brown and lose their luster, the internal tissue begins to rot, and eventually the plant dies because the roots lose their ability to absorb nutrients.

Control methods: This disease is mainly caused by infection with pathogenic bacteria, so during planting the seed ginger and soil should be disinfected to eliminate the pathogens, and clean water should be used for watering along with pollution-free fertilizers. Diseased plants should be promptly pulled up, taken out of the field and burned, and the diseased holes should be disinfected. During an outbreak, chemicals such as Mie Jun Wei, Gen Fu Ling, Dexon, and Junkang can be used as a root drench for control.

2. Rot disease

When rot disease occurs, the leaves of ginger turn yellow, gradually shrivel and dry up, and finally the entire plant dies. Usually after infection the root system becomes soft and eventually rots, with a foul odor.

Control methods: The pathogens of this disease mainly infect plants through wounds on the ginger, so during planting special care should be taken not to cause damage to the surface of the ginger, and when the disease occurs, chemicals should be sprayed for control.

3. Leaf spot disease

Leaf spot disease mainly affects the leaves. When it occurs, spindle-shaped or oblong lesions appear on the leaves, with brown edges and a yellow-white center, and they perforate very easily. In the later stages of the disease, large numbers of small black spots appear on the lesions, and in severe cases the leaves are covered with lesions of various sizes. Its pathogen is Phyllosticta zingiberi, and its infectivity is strong; it can spread through wind and rain, and the disease occurs easily in warm and humid conditions, with dense plants and high field humidity.

Control methods: Practice reasonable crop rotation, avoid continuous cropping, and apply more organic fertilizer to improve the disease resistance of the plants. In the early stage of the disease, chemicals such as thiophanate-methyl wettable powder and chlorothalonil wettable powder can be sprayed for control.

4. Ginger stem borer

The ginger stem borer, also called the boring worm, mainly damages ginger as larvae. The larvae bore into and feed on ginger seedlings, causing the leaves to turn yellow and wither, and in severe cases the plants die.

Control methods: Capture and kill the adults to prevent them from reproducing rapidly. During the larval stage, pyrethroid pesticides can be sprayed to kill them, and spraying them on the heart leaves of the seedlings gives excellent results.

5. Ginger maggot

The ginger maggot is mainly a pest of ginger during storage, affecting the yield and quality of ginger. The larvae bore into the ginger and keep feeding, leaving only the skin at the damaged part, and their excrement also causes the ginger to rot.

Control methods: Clear away the source of the pests, and immediately discard seed ginger found to be infested. During storage, thoroughly clean the ginger cellar, and use dichlorvos spray to kill the ginger maggots.
