What are the latest points to note when growing mustard greens?
Mustard greens are a fairly unique vegetable in our country; both their roots and their leaves can be used. In many places people call them kohlrabi. They can be stir-fried directly and can also be used for pickling. They can be grown in all parts of our country. As people's living standards continue to rise, mustard greens have become one of the vegetables everyone greatly enjoys. Market demand is relatively large, and the growing area is gradually increasing. So let us take a look below at which issues we need to pay attention to when growing mustard greens.
1. Time
The sowing time for mustard greens is mainly related to the growing region. Generally, they can be grown in spring and autumn, but autumn sowing is still the main method. In places such as the Yangtze-Huanghuai region of our country, sowing can basically begin in July each year, and the latest sowing time cannot be later than October. Of course, the best sowing time is August; mustard greens grown in August have the best yield and quality. Therefore, we need to choose a suitable time for growing according to specific conditions.
2. Temperature
Mustard greens are a cool-loving vegetable and are suitable for growing at temperatures of 15 to 25 degrees. Therefore, when choosing the growing time, the temperature issue also needs to be considered. Generally, places where the annual average temperature can reach about 15 degrees are most suitable for growing mustard greens. At the same time, we should note that the growing temperature cannot be higher than 30 degrees, otherwise it will affect the quality of the mustard greens, and in severe cases it will cause the plants to be scorched to death by the sun.
3. Pre-sprouting
Before sowing, we need to treat the mustard green seeds and pre-sprout them. Generally, mustard green seeds are in a dormant state, so we need to first sun the seeds, then place the seeds in an environment with a temperature of 3 to 4 degrees for pre-sprouting. Generally, they can be sown after 2 to 3 days.
4. Sowing
Mustard greens are generally sown by broadcasting, but when sowing, note that the seeds must be spread evenly. Second, after spreading the seeds, press the seeds into the soil so they are not carried away by wind or rain. At the same time, this also helps the seeds absorb water and promotes the speed of sprouting. Finally, if you are not afraid of the trouble, you can also use drilling, which can reduce a certain amount of labor for later field management.
5. Density
Because broadcasting is generally used for sowing, the density is not controlled and needs to be adjusted later. So when the mustard green seedlings grow to a certain extent, we thin and fill in the seedlings. At the same time, the excess mustard green seedlings can be transplanted. Usually, it is necessary to ensure at least about 40,000 plants per mu. Generally, final planting is carried out at a row spacing of 50 to 55 cm and a plant spacing of about 40 to 50 cm. Only in this way will the normal growth of mustard greens not be affected. Among these, the density can be adjusted reasonably according to the fertility of the soil.
6. Water and fertilizer
Mustard greens are a relatively moisture-loving vegetable. If there is no rainfall after sowing, one or two waterings are needed to ensure the emergence rate of the mustard greens. Second, after emergence, water in a timely manner, then water after final planting, and finally water scientifically according to the dryness of the field soil to ensure that the field humidity is at least above 70 percent. When preparing the land, we should apply base fertilizer well at the rate of 2,000 jin of organic fertilizer and 100 jin of compound fertilizer per mu, then carry out the first topdressing after final planting, mainly irrigating with nitrogen fertilizer as the main type. Because the growth of mustard greens requires a large amount of nutrients, at least four or five topdressings are needed throughout their entire growth period. The specific fertilization situation needs to be scientifically applied according to the growth condition of the mustard greens.
