Fennel, with its unique aroma, is one of the seasonings commonly used in our daily lives. Its uses are extremely wide, and it is also quite commonly grown, but fennel suffers from diseases during cultivation, which seriously affects the yield and quality of fennel. So what diseases will fennel suffer from during cultivation? Let's take a look below at the control methods for common fennel pests and diseases, to reduce losses.

1. Fennel powdery mildew

Powdery mildew mainly harms the above-ground stems and leaves. When it occurs, it generally appears first on the more mature parts. When the disease occurs, white powdery lesions appear on the leaves. As the disease develops, the lesions gradually expand and merge, until an abnormally thick layer of white powder appears on the stems and leaves. When the disease is severe, the leaves lose their green color, shrink and wither.

Control methods: In the early stage of the disease, spray with triadimefon, thiophanate-methyl and chlorothalonil for control. Spray once every 10 days, and 2-3 consecutive sprays are enough for control.

2. Fennel root rot

Root rot mainly harms the plant's root system, causing seedling death or root rot. When the disease is severe, it can cause plant death and affect yield. When the disease occurs, water-soaked lesions appear on the root system, which gradually turn into dark brown lesions, and finally the main root becomes yellow-rust colored and rots. In a humid environment, a white mold layer appears on the surface of the root crown, and the plant leaves turn yellow, dry up and die.

Control methods: Before sowing, use carbendazim to disinfect and sterilize the soil, or in the early stage of the disease use diniconazole EC or thiabendazole suspension concentrate as a root drench for control.

3. Fennel sclerotinia rot

Sclerotinia rot mainly harms the stems and leaves. When the disease occurs, the affected areas become brown and moist, gradually soften and rot. In the later stage of the disease, cobweb-like mold wraps around the affected areas, and dark brown sclerotia form inside the stems.

Control methods: Practice reasonable crop rotation. At planting, use quintozene mixed with soil to make poisonous soil and broadcast it on the ground for disinfection. In the early stage of the disease, spray with quintozene or iprodione for control.

4. Fennel gray mold

Gray mold mainly harms the leaves and leaf stalks of fennel, and sometimes also harms the corm. It generally infects through wounds on the leaf stalks, causing the leaves to die and rot, and producing large amounts of gray mold. After the corm is infected, water-soaked grayish-brown lesions appear, and the lesions gradually soften and rot, producing large amounts of gray mold.

Control methods: Before sowing, use mepanipyrim or dimethirimol to disinfect the soil and seeds. In the early stage of the disease, spray with thiabendazole, anilazine and vinclozolin for control.

5. Fennel viral disease

Viral disease harms the entire plant. It is one of the common viral diseases, and can be spread by aphids, as well as through watering and fertilizing. When the disease occurs, the leaves shrink and become deformed, twisted and tangled, or mosaic-mottled. The plant's growth is restricted, affecting the plant's normal flowering and fruiting.

Control methods: Strengthen aphid control to avoid spreading this disease through aphids. In addition, use virus-free water and fertilizer when watering and fertilizing. During cultivation, increase the application of phosphorus and potassium fertilizers to improve the plant's disease resistance. In the early stage of the disease, spray with ningnanmycin emulsifiable concentrate or potassium permanganate for control.
