As a common vegetable in our daily lives, onions hold a status comparable to garlic, scallions, and ginger. Onions contain a pungent odor that irritates the eyes when cutting them, causing tears. Onions are grown fairly widely in our country, but many people still do not know how to grow them, so today we bring you the specific process for growing onions. Let's take a look below!

1. Site selection

Onions have strong adaptability and can grow normally in almost all soils, but because the roots of onions are not strong at absorbing nutrients, when growing onions we should choose fertile, loose soil to promote root growth and development. The soil's ability to retain fertilizer and water, as well as its permeability, should not be too poor either. Moreover, onion growth requires a large amount of light, so choose an area with sufficient sunlight.

2. Land preparation

After choosing the soil for growing onions, the next step is to carry out mid-tillage and land preparation work on the soil. When preparing the land, we should decide the degree of preparation according to the water and fertilizer conditions and permeability of the soil where the onions are grown. After preparing the land, loosen the soil and expose it to the sun for 5-7 days to eliminate pathogens, parasites, and so on in the soil. Land preparation is generally carried out together with the application of base fertilizer, with the aim of improving soil fertility and enhancing the growth of onion seedlings.

3. Base fertilizer

As mentioned earlier, the base fertilizer should be applied together with land preparation, and the amount of base fertilizer applied is determined by the area of the soil. Fully decomposed farmyard manure can be used as base fertilizer, but an appropriate amount of elements such as phosphorus, potassium, and calcium should be added. When applying the base fertilizer, mix it evenly with the soil. After the onion seedlings emerge, apply nitrogen fertilizer in a timely manner to increase the growth rate of the seedlings.

4. Sowing

The correct sowing time is the key to ensuring normal seedling growth. Improper sowing time will hinder onion growth and affect onion yield and quality. In the south, the sowing time can be chosen in mid-September. Based on the past emergence situation of onions, reasonably control the sowing, and check and fill in gaps in the seedlings in a timely manner after the seedlings emerge. After sowing, cover with about 0.7-1 cm of nutrient soil to ensure uniform seedlings after emergence.

5. Transplanting

When about 80% of the seedlings have emerged, transplanting and field planting can begin, but when transplanting you should inspect the condition of the seedlings. Filter out some seedlings that are weak, overly large, or growing too vigorously. Use seedlings with well-developed roots and uniform growth distribution for field planting. According to the growth condition of the onion seedlings, plant seedlings of consistent specifications together, which facilitates later management and also ensures seedling growth.

6. Management

After the seedlings are transplanted, pay attention to management to prevent various pathogens such as downy mildew and Fusarium wilt, and do a good job in disease prevention and control. Because onions are mostly transplanted in autumn, when the temperature is relatively low, do not water too much after planting, otherwise the surface temperature will become too low and the growth rate of onion seedlings will decrease. However, a certain amount of water is still needed, so during the seedling growth period you must control the amount of watering well, ensuring it will not affect seedling growth while still providing the amount of water needed for growth.

The above is an introduction to the specific process of growing onions. Growing onions is relatively easy, but it still requires a correct process.
