Burdock, also known as greater burdock seed and tree-root vegetable, is rich in crude fiber, protein and various nutrients. Its roots can also be used as medicine, making it a vegetable that serves both as food and medicine, and it is deeply loved by people. So do you know how burdock should be planted? Come with the editor and take a look at its planting methods.

1. Land selection and soil preparation

Burdock prefers a bright, warm and humid environment, is relatively tolerant of heat and cold, and is suitable for growing in deep, well-drained, fertile soil, with soil rich in organic matter being the most ideal. Burdock should not be grown continuously; the previous crop is best as rapeseed, broad bean or similar crops. Before planting, apply 3000-4000 kg of farmyard manure per mu, 50 of superphosphate and an appropriate amount of compound fertilizer in combination with soil preparation. Mix it into the soil while plowing, then harrow finely and level.

2. Sowing

Burdock generally uses seed propagation. Select plump seeds free of pests and diseases, soak them in warm water for one day, then place them in a warm place and rinse once a day until the seeds show white sprouts, after which they can be sown. Sowing methods include hole sowing and drill sowing. For drill sowing, open a shallow furrow 2-3 cm deep at a row spacing of 60 cm, scatter the seeds evenly into the furrow, and then cover with soil. For hole sowing, dig holes at a plant and row spacing of 30×60 cm, generally sowing about 5 seeds per hole, then cover with soil and press lightly, and cover with soil to retain moisture.

3. Field management

After the seeds emerge, remove the covering grass on cloudy days or in the evening, but when the seedlings grow to 2-3 leaves, thin them in time. For drill sowing, leave one plant at a plant spacing of 4-5, and for hole sowing leave 2 plants per hole; any extra ones can be transplanted or pulled out. When the seedlings grow to 4-5 leaves, final thinning should be done in time: for drill sowing leave one plant at a plant spacing of 30 cm, while for hole sowing leave one plant per hole. Cultivation and weeding should be carried out during thinning. Burdock grows relatively slowly, and if there are many weeds, it will affect its growth and may even cause death, so cultivation and weeding are extremely important. During the entire growth period, cultivation and weeding should be done 4-5 times.

4. Fertilizer and water management

If you want burdock to grow quickly, fertilization is essential. In April of the second year after sowing, apply 1000 kg of farmyard manure and 15 kg of diammonium phosphate per mu, scatter them on the ground, and turn them into the soil in combination with cultivation. During the flowering period, spray potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer per mu, which can promote flowering and fruiting. Water in time during drought, and drain in time during the rainy season to avoid excessive water accumulation causing root rot.
