How to grow crown daisy? A detailed guide to the latest cultivation methods
Crown daisy is also known as tonghao, penghao, haocai, chrysanthemum greens, and so on. It is an annual or biennial herbaceous plant of the Asteraceae family. Because it was a delicacy exclusively served in the imperial court in ancient times, it is called crown daisy. It calms the mind, nourishes the spleen and stomach, dissolves phlegm and fluids, and benefits the intestines and stomach. As the planting area has increased, it has gradually appeared on our dining tables. So how should crown daisy be grown? Let's find out together.
1. Site selection and land preparation
When planting crown daisy, it is best to choose fertile, loose, well-drained sandy soil, and good drainage and irrigation conditions are also required. After choosing the planting site, begin preparing the land and plowing. During plowing, apply 500-600 kg of farmyard manure per mu as base fertilizer, then rake it fine and level it, and make beds according to the terrain: make flat beds on flat terrain and short beds on undulating terrain.
2. Seed treatment
Crown daisy is propagated by seed, but before sowing the seeds must be treated to increase the germination rate. 3-4 days before sowing, soak the seeds in warm water for 10-20 minutes, and after the water cools, continue soaking for 1 day. After removing them and letting them dry, place them in a greenhouse at about 25 degrees for germination. During germination, wash them with water once a day to prevent the seeds from spoiling. If they are new seeds, subject them to low-temperature treatment to break dormancy.
3. Sowing
Sowing can be done in spring or autumn. In spring, direct sowing in the open field or sowing with plastic film can be used, while in autumn, cold frames or open-field sowing in batches and stages can be used. The sowing methods are broadcasting or drilling. Broadcasting generally uses 4-5 kg of seed per mu; for drilling, sow at a row spacing of about 10 cm, and the amount of seed used is generally only half that of broadcasting. When sowing in early spring, cover with medicated soil to prevent damping-off disease. Seedling management generally lasts 20-30 days, and when the seedlings grow 3-4 true leaves, they can be transplanted.
4. Field management
After 5-7 days, they will sprout and emerge. When the seeds germinate, pay attention to maintaining moisture so that the soil is not too dry, which would be unfavorable for seed germination. When the seedlings grow 2-3 cm, thin them and pull out weak seedlings, keeping a plant spacing of 1-2 cm when thinning. While thinning, cultivate and weed; cultivate shallowly to avoid damaging the root system. When the seedlings grow to 3-4 true leaves, transplant them, with a plant spacing of 4-6 cm. When thinning and setting the seedlings, water them to prevent the seedlings from dying, and also apply a topdressing of dilute liquid nitrogen fertilizer to make them grow quickly. When they grow to 20 cm, they can be harvested.
