Cauliflower is an annual plant of the genus Brassica in the cruciferous family (Brassicaceae). It is a vegetable grown for its flower head, and together with broccoli and head cabbage, it is a variety of cabbage. Cauliflower is nutritious and delicious, making it one of people's favorite vegetables. It has a long growing period and a high demand for nutrients, so if you want to achieve high yields when growing it, fertilization is the key point. So how should cauliflower be fertilized? Let's take a look together.

1. Nutrient Requirements

According to experimental research, for every 1000 kg of cauliflower flower heads produced, 8-11 kg of pure nitrogen, 2-3 kg of phosphorus pentoxide, and 9-12 kg of potassium oxide are consumed. Among these, the elements it needs most are nitrogen and potassium. During the peak growing season, it has a relatively high demand for nitrogen fertilizer, while during the flower head formation stage, it has a relatively high demand for phosphorus fertilizer. Before budding, the supply of phosphorus and potassium fertilizer must be ensured. In addition to these three conventional fertilizers, it also has a certain demand for trace elements such as boron, magnesium, calcium, and molybdenum.

2. Apply Sufficient Base Fertilizer

Before production, in order to meet the nutrient requirements of cauliflower, in addition to choosing loose, fertile soil with strong fertilizer retention capacity, decomposed farmyard manure and NPK compound fertilizer should be applied as base fertilizer before planting. When applying, combine it with plowing and mix it evenly with the soil. Generally, apply 2500-300 kg of decomposed farmyard manure, 15-20 kg of compound fertilizer, and about 0.5 kg of borax per mu to avoid nutrient deficiency symptoms in seedlings at the early stage.

3. Reasonable Topdressing

After applying sufficient base fertilizer, cauliflower needs topdressing three times throughout its growth period. The first time is at the rosette stage, when 10 kg of urea and about 5 kg of potassium sulfate are applied per mu to promote rapid differentiation of flower buds and flower buds; the second time is at the early flower head stage, when 15 kg of urea and 8 kg of potassium sulfate are applied per mu to promote rapid expansion of the flower head; the third time is at the mid flower head stage, when 10 kg of urea and 5 kg of potassium sulfate are applied per mu. After fertilizing, pay attention to water supply and maintain a certain level of soil moisture, which can accelerate the absorption of fertilizer by the plants and increase yield.

4. Foliar Fertilization

Foliar fertilization is an auxiliary measure for growing cauliflower. It can supplement trace elements for the plants in the middle and late stages, preventing nutrient deficiency symptoms that could lead to a decline in yield and quality. It should be carried out according to the condition of the plants and soil. For example, if the soil is deficient in boron, a low-concentration borax solution can be sprayed during the flower head stage; if deficient in magnesium, a low-concentration magnesium sulfate solution can be sprayed 1-2 times; if deficient in molybdenum, a low-concentration ammonium molybdate solution can be sprayed. In short, properly carrying out foliar fertilization according to the growth needs of the plants can prevent premature aging of the plants and improve quality.
