Detailed Guide to the Latest Planting Methods for Green Radish
There are many varieties of radish now, among which white radish is the most common, but green radish is also a very common type of radish in China, also called green-skinned radish. In China, green radish is mainly produced in Tianjin and Shandong. Green radish contains abundant nutrients needed by the human body, has high edible value, and also has certain medicinal value. So today we will mainly learn about the planting methods for green radish. Let's take a look.
1. Preparing the Planting Site
Green radish is a deep-rooted plant, but it does not have high requirements for the growing environment. However, the quality of green radish grown in different soils varies. It is generally suitable for planting in sandy loam soil with deep soil layers, a well-developed drainage system, and sufficient nutrients. The soil should be deeply plowed, and base fertilizer should be applied heavily. The base fertilizer is mainly barnyard manure, supplemented with plant ash, phosphate fertilizer, and ammonium bicarbonate. Turn the potassium fertilizer into the soil, rake the ground level, open furrows at a row spacing of about 1.2 m, then sun-dry the soil and wait for sowing.
2. Scientific Sowing
The sowing time for radish is generally related to the climate of the planting site, but in most areas sowing is done around August, and harvesting can be done by the end of October, though some are slightly later. Generally, the growing period and harvest period should be controlled before December. Sowing is generally done by drilling. Choose overcast and rainy weather for sowing, with a distance of about 60 cm between each row. Scatter the seeds evenly and cover them with soil. In this way, the seedling emergence rate will be much higher.
3. Seedling Stage Management
Since the growing period of green radish is not long to begin with, the seedling stage is relatively short as well. Green radish is not sown with plant spacing in mind, so after sowing, thinning needs to be done twice. When the seedlings grow to about 4 to 5 cm, carry out the first thinning, with a plant spacing of about 4 to 5 cm at this time. Then water once a week to maintain field moisture and promote the growth of green radish seedlings. When 4 to 5 true leaves have grown, carry out the second thinning, with a distance of 30 to 40 cm between each plant, and reasonably carry out one shallow plowing to prevent the soil from becoming compacted and affecting soil permeability.
4. Field Management
After green radish seedlings enter the growing period, their demand for water and nutrients becomes greater. In the early stage, we need to first promote the growth of the aboveground stems and leaves. A ternary compound fertilizer can be used for fertilization, and water should be given about once every ten days, with intertillage and weeding carried out about once every half month. When the green radish root expands, we should pay attention to balanced moisture at this time to avoid cracking of the radish. During this period, topdressing is mainly done with decomposed farmyard manure to promote root expansion, with rational use of phosphate fertilizer and urea.
