The Welsh onion is a crop commonly grown in China, with an extremely wide growing range in the country, especially in the north, where many people make money by growing it. When growing Welsh onions, proper fertilization is the key to achieving high yields, so how should Welsh onions be fertilized to achieve high yields? Let's take a look together.

1. Fertilizer requirement characteristics

The Welsh onion is a fertilizer-loving crop. Like other vegetable crops, it is relatively sensitive to nitrogen. Applying nitrogen fertilizer during cultivation will accelerate its growth and produce an obvious yield-increasing effect. According to research, producing 3000 kg of Welsh onions per mu requires the consumption of 8-10 kg of nitrogen, 1.5-1.8 kg of phosphorus, and 9-11 kg of potassium. Welsh onions are relatively sensitive to phosphorus during the seedling stage; a phosphorus deficiency at the seedling stage will affect the later yield, and during the formation stage of the blanched pseudostem, the application of potassium fertilizer should be strengthened. In addition to nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, calcium, magnesium, boron, and manganese also have a certain effect on the growth of Welsh onions. When nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium are sufficient, additional application of calcium, manganese, and boron has an obvious yield-increasing effect.

2. Fertilization principles

When growing Welsh onions, not applying or applying little potassium fertilizer will cause a substantial decline in soil potassium, leading to an imbalance in the ratio of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, thereby intensifying pests and diseases in Welsh onions, seriously affecting yield and quality, and reducing economic benefits. Applying potassium fertilizer can promote the growth of Welsh onions and also improve resistance to pests and diseases. Balanced fertilization has an obvious yield-increasing effect and can also, through the vitamin C and soluble sugar content of Welsh onions, reduce the content of harmful substances such as nitrate.

3. Base fertilizer

After selecting the planting site, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied in combination with land preparation. The fertilization method should depend on the fertilizer. Generally, when the amount of fertilizer is relatively large, the broadcast application method should be used; when the amount of fertilizer is small, it should be applied at the bottom of the planting holes. The fertilizer is generally decomposed or semi-decomposed organic fertilizer. Per mu, 5000-8000 kg of decomposed barnyard manure can be applied. For phosphorus-deficient soil, 25 kg of superphosphate and 150 kg of plant ash can be applied per mu, and for potassium deficiency, 8-10 kg of potassium sulfate can be applied.

4. Topdressing

After planting, the Welsh onion grows slowly. When it enters the peak growing season, the old leaves turn yellow and wither while new leaves continue to grow. At this time, in order to make it produce more leaves and grow leaf sheaths, topdressing should be carried out in time after the Beginning of Autumn. Apply 4000 kg of farmyard manure per mu on the ridge backs, or apply 150 kg of cake fertilizer per mu, then shallow hoe and water after fertilization. After half a month, a second topdressing should be applied. This time, 750-1000 kg of manure water should be applied per mu, carried out together with earthing up and watering. After one month, a third topdressing should be applied, with 15-25 kg of nitrogen fertilizer per mu. After fertilization, water and earth up, which can rapidly increase weight.
