The welsh onion is one of the common vegetables in our daily lives, grown on a large scale across the country. However, many growers currently buy seedlings to plant themselves, and they still have some gaps in their understanding of welsh onion seedling-raising techniques. This makes the growing cost higher and squeezes profits. Now follow the editor to take a look at welsh onion seedling-raising techniques.

1. Site selection and land preparation

A plot with flat terrain, good ventilation and sunlight, close to a water source, and fertile, loose soil should be chosen as the seedling bed. Continuous cropping must be avoided, and preventive measures against pests and diseases should also be taken. During land preparation, 15-20 kg of potassium sulfate compound fertilizer per mu can be applied as a base fertilizer to provide the nutrients needed for seed germination and seedling growth.

2. Selection and sprouting

There are many welsh onion varieties. When planting, choose a variety suitable for the local area according to local climate, soil and other conditions. It is recommended to choose varieties with good cold resistance, long white stalks, lodging resistance, high and stable yield, and good quality. After selecting the seeds and preparing to sow, to ensure the germination rate, the seeds should be soaked and sprouted before sowing. First soak the planting seeds in cold water for 8-10, then remove them, wrap them in a wet towel, and place them in a warm water environment at 15-20 degrees. Open and rinse them with clean water once a day. After about a week, when the radicle emerges, they can be sown.

3. Sowing time and method

The welsh onion has fairly strict sowing time requirements. Generally, sowing is done in September-October of the previous year. If sown too early, there will be too many seedlings before winter, and they are prone to bolting the following spring; if sown too late, the seedlings will be thin and weak in winter and are easily killed by freezing during overwintering. When sowing, to make the seedlings grow evenly, it is best to use the drill sowing method. On the seedling bed, open shallow furrows at a row spacing of 10-15 cm, water, and then sow. Generally, about 350-400 grams of seed are used per mu.

4. Seedling-stage management

From sowing until emergence, water frequently to keep the field moist, so as to prevent the soil from crusting and making it difficult for seedlings to emerge. After the young shoots emerge, water once. When the cotyledons straighten and the root system is firmly established, water once or twice more. When watering, control the amount of water; it should not be too much, so as to prevent excessive seedling growth. When watering, cultivation and weeding can be combined to promote strong and healthy seedling growth. Before overwintering, irrigate once with freezing water and apply one topdressing, which can raise the ground temperature and ensure the seedlings overwinter safely. In spring, when the temperature rises and the seedlings turn green, water once. After that, the seedlings enter the peak growth period, so fertilizer and water management and field management should be strengthened, and thinning and final spacing should be carried out.
