Before planting cucumbers, in order to promote the seeds to sprout as quickly as possible, increase the germination rate, and lay a solid foundation for a bumper harvest, seed soaking and sprouting treatment is generally carried out before sowing. So how exactly should cucumber seed soaking and sprouting be done? Come and take a look at the detailed introduction with the editor.

1. Seed selection and sunning

Before planting, choose suitable superior varieties, select plump, uniformly sized seeds, and place them in the sun to dry for 1-2 days. When sunning the seeds, do not let the seeds touch the ground directly; use cloth as a barrier instead, so as to avoid scalding the seeds and causing them to lose vitality. In addition, to make the seeds receive heat evenly when sunning, stir them several times from time to time so that all the seeds can fully absorb heat.

2. Soaking the seeds

Put the sun-dried seeds into a container, then add hot water at 55-60 degrees; the amount of water should be just enough to submerge the seeds. When adding the hot water, stir continuously, which can both make the seeds receive heat evenly and avoid reducing seed vitality due to excessively high water temperature. After soaking for 10 minutes, wait until the water temperature drops to normal temperature, then soak the seeds for 4-6 hours. After soaking is complete, rub and wash the gelatinous substance on the surface of the seeds clean, remove them and let them dry.

3. Disinfection

In order to avoid the harm of pests and diseases, seeds are generally subjected to disinfection and sterilization treatment. Usually, a very low-concentration carbendazim solution is used to soak the seeds for 1 hour, then they are soaked in clean water for several hours, after which seed soaking and sprouting can be carried out. Some seeds that are purchased directly have already been treated at the time of sale with a seed coating containing fungicides and various trace elements. Since the seed coating agent has a good sterilizing effect, disinfection is generally not needed.

4. Sprouting

After the treated seeds are rinsed clean, soak them at room temperature for 4-8 hours. Once the seeds have absorbed enough water, drain them, wrap them in a towel, place them in a container, and put them in an environment at about 25 degrees at room temperature to sprout. During sprouting, turn the seeds frequently so that they are kept at an even temperature. They will sprout after about 24 hours. When a small portion of the seeds show root tips, the temperature of the sprouting environment can be lowered. After about two days, when sprouting is uniform, sowing can be carried out.
