Cucumber Grafting Technique Tutorial, Latest Method Explained in Detail
Cucumber grafting to cultivate strong seedlings is the key to obtaining high yields. Grafting refers to attaching the branch or bud of one plant onto another plant so that it becomes a complete plant. At present, grafting is widely used in cucumber production. It can improve the stress resistance and disease resistance of cucumbers, and can increase yield and efficiency. Now follow the editor to take a look at the detailed introduction.
1. Selection of rootstock and scion
There are many rootstocks suitable for cucumbers, such as the common pumpkin, luffa, bottle gourd, calabash, and so on. According to experiments, it is believed that China's black-seeded pumpkin and white-seeded pumpkin are relatively suitable. They can tolerate low temperatures, have good compatibility with cucumbers, mature early after grafting, can be marketed earlier, and seize the market, and have no adverse effects on cucumbers. For the scion, mainly choose varieties suitable for solar greenhouse cultivation, and excellent varieties with low-temperature tolerance, early maturity, and strong disease resistance should be selected.
2. Approach grafting method
The approach grafting method is a commonly used grafting method in rural areas. It is simple and easy to learn, and the survival rate is extremely high. When applying it, cucumbers should be sown 3-5 days earlier than the rootstock to be grafted, and rootstocks and scions with similar growth heights should be selected for grafting. The grafting time is when the pumpkin has grown two cotyledons that are flattened and the cucumber has grown its first true leaf. Take out the two kinds of seedlings, remove the true leaves of the pumpkin seedlings, and use a knife to make a diagonal cut 1-1.5 cm below the pumpkin cotyledons, with a depth of half the stem diameter. Then make a diagonal cut on the cucumber plant 1.5-2 cm below the cotyledons, with a depth of three-fifths of the stem diameter. Fit the two cuts together, with the cucumber leaves pressed on top of the pumpkin leaves, and then fix them in place.
3. Slant insertion grafting method
The slant insertion grafting method requires a larger rootstock and a smaller scion, so the rootstock pumpkin should be sown first, and then the scion cucumber should be sown later. The suitable grafting time for the rootstock is when the seedling grows to one leaf and one heart, and the true leaf expands to 3-5 cm, while the scion should wait until the cucumber seedling cotyledons expand, the cotyledon color turns dark green, and the true leaf has not yet grown. When grafting, remove the true leaves, heart leaves, and growing point of the rootstock, then use a bamboo stick the same thickness as the scion to insert obliquely into the stem base within 1 cm, preferably to damage the epidermis of the hypocotyl, and do not pull out the bamboo stick for the time being. Choose a scion with a thickness comparable to the bamboo stick, make a horizontal cut 1 cm below the cotyledons, insert it obliquely into two-thirds of the hypocotyl, then make the same cut from the opposite side, cut off the scion, then pull out the bamboo stick and insert the scion obliquely into the hole.
