Chili peppers are the most common vegetables in our daily lives and one of the seasonings we use most often. Chili peppers not only have high edible value, but can also be grown as ornamental plants. When growing chili peppers, fertilization is an important step, as it affects the yield and quality of the chili peppers. So how should chili peppers be fertilized to achieve high yields? Let's find out together.

1. Seedling-raising substrate

When raising chili pepper seedlings, it is best to dig soil from a plot where solanaceous vegetables and tobacco have never been grown. You can use the topsoil from plots where onions and garlic, celery, or cereal crops have been grown, dig it out, and after drying it in the sun or crushing it, sift out the fine soil. Thoroughly decomposed barnyard manure should likewise be crushed and sifted for later use, then mixed with the soil at a ratio of 1:3. Then, for every 1000 kg of cultivation soil, apply 1 kg of calcium phosphate, 20 kg of plant ash, and 0.5 kg of diammonium phosphate. After mixing evenly, it can be used as a seedling-raising substrate.

2. Applying sufficient base fertilizer

Before the seedlings are transplanted to the growing plot, in order to promote seedling growth, sufficient base fertilizer is generally applied in the field. This is one of the effective measures for obtaining a high yield of chili peppers. The base fertilizer should be mainly organic fertilizer, and the organic fertilizer must be fully decomposed to avoid introducing pathogens and insect eggs, which could cause pests and diseases in the seedlings. Application is carried out in combination with land preparation and plowing. Generally, 4000-5000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure is broadcast or applied in furrows per mu, together with 30 kg of diammonium phosphate or urea and 100 kg of plant ash, which can continuously provide nutrients to the seedlings.

3. Reasonable topdressing

Chili peppers have a large fertilizer demand during the growing period. In order for them to have enough nutrients to flower and set fruit, topdressing is generally required 2-3 times during the growing period. The first time is at the young fruit stage, when 1500 kg of human and animal manure and urine can be applied per mu as topdressing. It is recommended to apply topdressing before the rainy season; if there is no rain, water promptly after topdressing, which can speed up the absorption of the fertilizer. The second time is at the full fruit stage, when 10-15 kg of ternary compound fertilizer is applied per mu as topdressing, likewise followed by watering, which can provide the plants with phosphorus and potassium fertilizer and has an obvious yield-increasing effect. The third time is before harvest, when topdressing should be applied vigorously and frequently, basically once a week with human and animal manure and urine fertilizer, best done in the early morning or evening.

4. Foliar fertilization

Foliar fertilization generally refers to spraying fertilizer on the leaves. Its advantages are that it uses a small amount, has a high absorption rate, and takes effect quickly. It can also enhance the plant's photosynthesis and chlorophyll content, help the plant accumulate organic matter, and effectively prevent flower and fruit drop. It can generally increase yield by about 10%-20%. Specifically, spray a low-concentration borax aqueous solution 1-2 times during the flowering period to increase the fruit-setting rate, and spray a low-concentration monopotassium phosphate solution multiple times in the later growth stage, which has an excellent yield-increasing effect. In addition, note that spraying foliar fertilizer is prohibited half a month before harvest.
