How to prune eggplant? The latest pruning technique and method tutorial is here
During the planting process, eggplants will inevitably enter a decline period. The first decline period does not mean the eggplant plant is ruined; farmers can make it regenerate through pruning. So pruning is an excellent choice for farmers. Then what is the pruning process like?
1. Timing selection
In terms of timing, eggplant pruning is mostly concentrated in the decline period after harvest. It shows as the upper branches of the eggplant plant beginning to show signs of withering for the first time, and some parts stop setting fruit. At this point, pruning can basically begin. Some branches also show this situation in the late fruiting stage. For branches like these, it is recommended to prune immediately after harvest. Of course, eggplants in the normal season can basically be pruned around the end of July, while for off-season ones, the timing can be determined by referring to the above and judging according to plant growth conditions.
2. Pruning parts
The parts to be pruned are relatively varied. In some places, some withered branches are pruned, while in others, everything above the stem is cut off directly. Everyone should choose the pruning method according to their own eggplant variety. If the growth rate is fast and the yield is high, it is recommended to mainly prune withered branches to continuously ensure high eggplant yield. If it is mainly greenhouse eggplant, you can try pruning from the part about 10-15 cm above the root stem, or if the whole plant appears withered, this method can also be used. In this way, the survival rate will be much higher, and the later fruiting period of the eggplant will be much longer.
3. Treatment after pruning
After pruning is completed, the wounds at the pruning sites should be treated. Generally, scissors are used for pruning. Breaking them off will cause secondary damage to the eggplant plant, reduce the survival rate, and is also not conducive to treating the wounds. At this time, carbendazim can be mixed with water and sprayed on the wound sites to prevent the invasion of pathogens. Then apply more fertilizer and water more to give the eggplant plant enough nutrients to grow better new branches and stems. The cut residual branches should be taken away from the soil and not left in the soil. These weakened old branches have a relatively high chance of carrying pathogens, so avoid forming a source of infection.
After eggplant pruning is completed, extra attention should be paid to its early growth conditions. Some may wither due to not adapting. In order to reduce the influence of external factors, it is recommended to choose weather that is relatively sunny but with relatively weak sunlight.
