Latest Tutorial on Lettuce Planting and Management Techniques
Lettuce is the common name for leaf lettuce, also known as goose lettuce, mai zai cai, and wo zai cai. Its leaves can be eaten raw, crisp and refreshing, hence the name lettuce. Lettuce is increasingly favored by consumers on the market, so the number of people growing it is also increasing year by year. So how should it be managed during planting? Let's take a look together.
1. Scientific watering
After the seedlings have recovered from transplanting, the amount and frequency of watering should be controlled according to soil moisture and growth conditions. Generally, water once every 5-7 days. When the temperature is lower, the amount of water should be smaller, and the watering frequency should also be reduced. During the peak growing season, lettuce needs more water, and the soil should be kept moist frequently. After the head forms, watering should be controlled to avoid uneven moisture causing head splitting or heart rot.
2. Cultivation and weeding
After the seedlings have recovered from transplanting, cultivation and weeding should be carried out promptly. Cultivation can loosen the soil, increase soil permeability, prevent soil compaction from inhibiting root growth, promote root development, and increase yield. Pay attention to the depth of cultivation to avoid damaging the roots. Weeds will compete with lettuce for nutrients and growing space, and in severe cases cause weed infestation, leading to weak growth or death of lettuce, affecting growers' income. When planting, remove weeds as soon as they appear. Manual weeding is recommended; do not use herbicides.
3. Topdressing
Apply sufficient basal fertilizer before planting. When the basal fertilizer is sufficient, no topdressing is needed in the early growth stage until the heading stage, when a nitrogen fertilizer is applied along with watering to promote rapid leaf growth. After 15-20 days, apply the second round of fertilizer, preferably a nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer, at 15-20 kg of compound fertilizer per mu. When the heart leaves begin to curl, apply the third round of fertilizer, also compound fertilizer, at about 20 kg per mu.
4. Pests and diseases
The main diseases of lettuce include downy mildew, soft rot, viral disease, dry rot, tipburn, etc. Insect pests include leafminers, whiteflies, aphids, thrips, etc. Pest and disease control should focus on prevention, strengthening field management, applying more phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and increasing the plants' disease resistance. When disease occurs, choose low-toxicity, high-efficiency, low-residue pesticides, but be sure to stop using them half a month before harvest.
