How to prevent early bolting in broccoli? The latest measures are here
Broccoli is a common vegetable with high planting returns, and it is widely grown all over the country. However, during cultivation, early bolting can occur, which lowers the quality of the broccoli and also severely affects the yield. So what causes early bolting in broccoli? How should it be prevented? Let's take a look together.
1. Causes of bolting
Broccoli is a low-temperature, long-day plant. Its vernalization requirement for low temperature is not high, and it can sense low temperature after seed germination, but the completion of vernalization varies depending on the variety. For early-maturing varieties, vernalization generally begins when the seedling stem diameter is 3.5 mm and the temperature is 10-17, and vernalization is completed after about 20 days; for mid-maturing varieties, when the seedling stem diameter reaches 10 mm and the environment is 5-10 degrees, vernalization is also completed in about 20 days; while late-maturing varieties require a stem diameter of 15 mm and need 50 days at 2-5 degrees to complete vernalization. This period is relatively long, and once the temperature is too high, late-maturing varieties are very prone to completing vernalization early and then bolting.
2. Preventive measures
1. Choose suitable varieties
Late-maturing varieties are very prone to early bolting, so when planting, try to choose early-maturing or mid-maturing varieties and choose fewer late-maturing ones. When sowing, also choose a suitable time, and it should not be too early or too late.
2. Strengthen temperature control at the seedling stage
After sowing, the temperature should be controlled at 23-25 degrees. After the seedlings emerge, the temperature should be lowered slightly, kept at 15-18 degrees during the day, not higher than 25 degrees, and not lower than 10 degrees at night. For early-maturing varieties, the seedling temperature must not remain below 12 degrees for a long time, otherwise vernalization will occur early and cause early bolting later.
3. Strengthen ventilation
Broccoli grows vigorously and has a relatively high yield, so it needs to consume a large amount of nutrients and likes fertilizer. Therefore, sufficient base fertilizer should be applied before planting, and timely topdressing should be done during the growing period, so that fertilizer and water are sufficient. Only in this way can high yield and high quality be obtained. In addition, after transplanting, soil temperature should be protected; the daytime soil temperature is required to reach about 30 degrees, and at night it must not be lower than 18 degrees, which is beneficial for seedling recovery.
