How Does Daylily Reproduce? The Latest Propagation Techniques and Methods Tutorial
We are all familiar with the daylily; it is a common food ingredient in daily life. Not only can it be eaten, but it also has certain ornamental and medicinal value, with effects of reducing inflammation and clearing heat to stop bleeding. The economic benefits of growing it are still considerable, so do you know how it reproduces? Let's take a look at the propagation techniques for daylily.
1. Division Propagation Method
Select robust, vigorous old daylilies, dig out part of the rhizomes from the mother plant, remove the soil, cut off the old roots and diseased roots from the lower part of the rhizomes, separate them one plant at a time, peel open the brown fibrous covering on the outside of the rhizomes to expose the lateral buds. Keep 2-3 layers of new roots on the rhizomes and plant them in the field. This propagation method is simple to carry out and has a high survival rate. It can be done in all four seasons, but spring and autumn are preferable. It is a commonly used asexual propagation method in production.
2. Bud Division Propagation
The roots of the daylily are fleshy rhizomes, and on these fleshy rhizomes there are many protruding latent buds. These latent buds generally do not sprout; only when the main lateral buds are damaged will they sprout. Using this characteristic, these latent buds can be cut apart, and after cultivation they can form a new planting. Bud division propagation can be done in all four seasons, and likewise is best in spring and autumn. Dig out the plant, remove the fibrous root covering, expose the lateral buds, and cut it into several sections according to the latent bud positions, with each section required to have 1-3 bud clusters. This method is highly technical and has a high propagation coefficient, so rhizomes with strong vitality, a high survival rate, and a short age should be selected.
3. Seed Propagation
Seed propagation is the most commonly used in production; you can cultivate seeds yourself or buy seeds directly. After treating the seeds well, choose a sunny cold frame or greenhouse and other such sites, use fertile garden soil as the seedbed, and disinfect the soil. After soaking the seeds in warm water for 2 days, sow them. Use the spot sowing method, opening holes and sowing at a plant and row spacing of 15×3 cm, and cover with 2 cm of soil after sowing. Generally, with suitable temperature, seedlings emerge in about 1 week. Strengthen management after emergence, keep the soil moist, and at the same time pay attention to weeding and pest and disease control to promote seedling growth. They can be transplanted to the field the following year.
