The bolting stage of garlic is a critical period for increasing garlic yield. By this time the garlic has finished growing, and the next step is the growth period of the garlic scapes and bulbs. Management during this period is extremely important. However, there are also some issues to watch out for to avoid premature senescence of the plants. Let's take a look below at the key points to note during garlic bolting.

1. Water and Fertilizer Management

After garlic enters the bolting stage, its vegetative growth is rapid, all the leaves have emerged, the leaf area reaches its maximum, the garlic scapes begin to bolt, and the bulbs begin to develop. During this period, yellowing leaves and dry leaf tips are very likely to occur, so attention must be paid to water and fertilizer management, using plenty of water and fertilizer to promote plant growth so that the pseudostem grows uniformly thick from top to bottom. If water is lacking or fertilizer is cut off during this period, or if water and fertilizer are not supplied in time, it will hinder the normal growth of the plants, causing the pseudostem and bulbs to grow unevenly from top to bottom, and making the scapes difficult to pull and easy to break at harvest.

2. Stop Watering Before Harvest

About one week before harvesting the garlic scapes, watering should be stopped, and at the same time the soil should be shallowly hoed and loosened, so that the plants lack water and show wilting, to prevent the stem nodes from loosening and to help the scape harvest. Autumn-sown garlic bolts 7-10 days earlier than spring-sown garlic, which can greatly increase the yield and boost returns.

3. Foliar Fertilization

In garlic management, foliar fertilization should be strengthened to prevent the leaves from turning yellow and the tips from drying out, which can lead to premature senescence of the plants and reduced yield. Amino acid foliar fertilizer can be sprayed. At the same time, spraying borax solution and urea solution can both supplement the plants' trace elements and improve their disease resistance, increasing yield and quality.

4. Pest and Disease Control

When garlic enters the bolting stage, as temperatures rise, its pests and diseases also reach their peak period. The main diseases include purple blotch, leaf blight, and late blight. The main pests include thrips and garlic maggots. For diseases, chemicals such as mancozeb, mancozeb, and Antaisheng can be used for control; for pests, chlorpyrifos emulsifiable concentrate can be sprayed for control, or chlorpyrifos emulsifiable concentrate can be used to drench the roots for control.
