Potherb mustard, also known as snow mustard (Brassica juncea var. multiceps), is a common vegetable with excellent flavor and good nutritional value, and it is deeply loved by both urban and rural people. As market demand expands, its planting area is also growing wider and wider. However, to grow it well, field management is extremely important. Let's take a detailed look below.

1. Thinning and final thinning

When the seedlings grow their first true leaf, the first thinning can be carried out, removing the crowded seedlings; when 2-3 true leaves have grown, carry out the second thinning, this time removing leggy seedlings, thin and weak seedlings, and pest-damaged ones, keeping the seedling spacing at 3-5 cm. When the seedlings grow 3-4 true leaves, carry out final thinning. At this time the seedlings are basically growing uniformly, and no other operation is needed; simply widen the seedling spacing to 10 cm.

2. Transplanting and setting out

When the seedlings have grown to about 15 cm with 5-6 true leaves, they can be transplanted. In winter this is generally done in late September, and in spring generally in November. When transplanting, first lift the seedlings; when lifting seedlings, spray the seedbed with plenty of water to soften the soil, and be careful not to damage the seedling roots, so as not to affect the survival rate after transplanting. After lifting the seedlings, transplant them in grades according to size. In spring, generally 4000-5000 plants are transplanted per mu, while in winter this can be appropriately increased to 5000-6400 plants. If the soil is dry at transplanting, water once to settle the roots and improve the survival rate.

3. Timely topdressing

Before transplanting, base fertilizer is generally applied, 1500-2000 jin of fully decomposed high-quality organic fertilizer per mu, to ensure rapid plant growth. Compound fertilizer can also be used instead, applying 100-120 kg of NPK compound fertilizer per mu. After transplanting, carry out topdressing 2-3 times according to growth conditions, applying 5-6 jin of urea per mu each time, preferably diluted with water and applied as a drench.

4. Pest and disease control

Summer and autumn are the high-temperature seasons, and this is the period when pests and diseases occur frequently. The main pests include aphids, cabbage caterpillars, diamondback moths, and cutworms; the main diseases include viral disease, downy mildew, and clubroot. For pests and diseases, prevention is the main approach. During the seedling stage and growth period, a mixed pesticide of Lorsban, dichlorvos, phoxim, and others can be sprayed once every 7-10 days, which can provide excellent preventive effect.
