Fennel was originally called small huixiang, also known as xiangsicai or small fennel; its stems and leaves can be eaten as a vegetable, and its fruit can be used as a spice, which is the common cumin in our daily lives. Fennel is mostly grown by sowing, but if you want to increase the seed germination rate when planting, you need to carry out sprouting and seedling raising. Let's take a look at the detailed introduction below with the editor.

1. Seed selection

There are many fennel varieties. You should choose excellent varieties according to the local climate, soil and cultivation purpose. It is recommended to choose varieties with strong disease resistance and high, stable yield. Choose plump fennel seeds, wash the impurities off their surface with clean water, then remove and set aside.

2. Prepare the seedbed

Choose a plot with deep soil, loose and fertile soil and good drainage as the seedbed. The plot does not need to be too large; 10-15 sq m is enough. Deeply plow and level it, and if conditions permit, you can also disinfect the soil to eliminate pathogens and underground pests. To ensure that fennel seedlings have sufficient nutrients for growth, you can apply fully decomposed high-quality farmyard manure per sq m as base fertilizer, which can promote rapid seedling emergence and growth.

3. Soaking seeds to promote germination

Put the cleaned seeds into warm water at about 55°C and soak for 12 hours. After they have absorbed enough water, rub them repeatedly with your hands to separate them, then remove and wash them clean with water before promoting germination. Put the seeds in a gauze bag and place them in an environment of 20-22°C to promote germination. During germination, rinse them with warm water 1-2 times a day. After about a week, once the seeds germinate, you can sow and raise seedlings.

4. Seedling raising

Before sowing, water the seedbed thoroughly. Mix the germinated seeds evenly with fine sand and broadcast them on the seedbed, then cover with a 1 cm layer of fine soil. For spring sowing, raise seedlings in a greenhouse; for summer sowing, take shade and sun protection measures to cool down and retain moisture. Generally, about a week after sowing, the seedlings break through the soil. At this time, thin them promptly, and use light watering to keep the soil moist. When the seedlings grow to 5-6 true leaves, they can be transplanted to the field.
