Radishes have a long history of cultivation in China, so the growing techniques are basically completely mature. However, because there have been many novice growers in recent years, some very common problems have appeared in the process of growing radishes. So the editor has put together a summary of these problems for everyone, and also hopes that everyone can pay more attention to them in later growing. Let us take a look below at the points to note when growing radishes.

1. Soil

For the radish growing site, it is best to choose sandy loam with complete soil structure, fertile soil, soft texture, good permeability, good drainage, and strong moisture and fertilizer retention. Next, the soil pH is best at around 5.3 to 7. Also, do not carry out continuous cropping, and land whose previous crop was a cruciferous plant is best not used for growing radishes, as it is prone to disease.

2. Temperature

We all know that radishes are generally not grown in summer, and they are also harvested before Frost's Descent, which shows that they have certain requirements for growing temperature. Radish seeds have a very high germination rate and can sprout even at two or three degrees, but the temperature suitable for radish growth is 20 to 25 degrees. When radishes are at the seedling stage, they can grow in high temperatures above 25 degrees, and can also grow in an environment of minus two or three degrees. But when radishes reach the growing period, the normal growing temperature is best 15 to 20 degrees, and the temperature must not be lower than six degrees, otherwise the radishes will suffer frost damage.

3. Watering

Radishes have different water needs at different growth stages, so we should water according to their water requirements. During the radish seedling stage, generally there is not much need to water, unless there is drought and high temperature weather; in order to avoid dead seedlings, appropriate watering is needed. The time when radishes have the greatest water demand is their stem and leaf growth period and the period when the underground root expands, so we can water scientifically according to weather conditions and the moisture level of the field soil. Especially during the process of underground root expansion, there must not be alternating dry and wet conditions, otherwise radishes are very likely to crack; nor should it be too dry or too wet, otherwise it will lead to poor development or rot in radishes, affecting radish quality.

4. Fertilization

Radish growth requires a relatively large amount of fertilizer, but fertilizers cannot be used indiscriminately; scientific fertilization is needed according to its growth characteristics. First, before planting we should apply sufficient base fertilizer. The base fertilizer is mainly organic fertilizer, combined with an appropriate amount of ternary compound fertilizer and applied together with land preparation. Generally, when the base fertilizer is sufficient, there is basically no need to apply additional growth fertilizer, but if radishes show yellowing stems and leaves or are somewhat thin and weak during the growing period, then fertilizer needs to be applied additionally, mainly urea. When the radish root expands, it is best to apply a phosphorus and potassium fertilizer once, as this can promote root expansion and ensure radish quality.

Of course, when growing radishes, we also need to pay attention to intertillage and weeding as well as disease and pest control. When intertilling, note that it should be shallow cultivation, and do not damage the radish roots, which would affect normal radish growth. For disease and pest control, choose suitable pesticides, mix the pesticide concentration reasonably, and spray for control at the appropriate time.
