Analysis of the Causes of Ginger Seedling Death and Preventive Measures
During the cultivation of ginger, seedling death can occur, which can severely cause ginger to be cut down and bring huge economic losses to farmers. So what causes ginger seedling death? How should it be prevented? Let's take a look at the detailed introduction together.
1. Ginger blast disease
Many seeds have not undergone disinfection measures and will carry a large number of pathogens, which invade when the seeds germinate, and the seedlings have weak resistance, making infection very likely. Alternatively, if the soil has not undergone strict disinfection and sterilization measures, pathogens will also invade when the seeds sprout, resulting in seedling death.
Preventive methods: After harvesting seed ginger, sun-dry it for a few days, then place it in a 20-30 degree environment for one week to allow the wounds to heal and reduce the occurrence of ginger blast. Before planting, soak it in borax solution, carbendazim, and phosethyl-Al for 15-20 minutes to thoroughly eliminate the pathogens. During planting, avoid continuous cropping and apply 75-100 kg of quicklime per mu combined with land preparation for disinfection. If diseased plants are found, remove them promptly and scatter quicklime near the diseased holes.
2. Improper fertilization
Many farmers believe that the more fertilizer applied during planting, the higher the yield, so they blindly apply chemical fertilizers, favor nitrogen fertilizer, and apply fertilizer in concentrated amounts, causing fertilizer damage to ginger and, in severe cases, seedling death.
Preventive measures: Ginger fertilization should mainly use decomposed farmyard manure. Generally, apply 3000 kg of farmyard manure, 30 kg of superphosphate, and 15 kg of potassium fertilizer per mu as base fertilizer. Later topdressing should mainly use organic fertilizer, paired with an appropriate amount of chemical fertilizer, to increase soil organic matter content and promote rhizome expansion.
3. Waterlogging damage
When watering too much or failing to drain promptly after rain, the soil is very prone to caking and forming clods, causing waterlogging damage. Under high-temperature and high-humidity conditions, rhizome rot is very likely to occur, leading to seedling death.
Preventive measures: When planting, choose soil with deep soil layers, good permeability, and good drainage. Do not plant on clay soil. When preparing the land, dig drainage ditches well to ensure smooth drainage. Do not water too much at one time, and drain promptly after rain.
4. Ginger stem borer
The ginger stem borer, also known as the stem borer, is an omnivorous pest that can cause damage from the emergence of seedlings until harvest. It damages by larvae boring and feeding. After hatching for 2-3 days, the larvae invade from the gaps between leaf sheaths and stems or from the heart leaves, continuously boring upward and feeding, causing the stems to become hollow, blocking the transport of water and nutrients, and over time causing plant death.
Preventive measures: Manual capture can be used. Because the ginger stem borer is a boring pest, chemical control is not very effective against it, and older larvae have strong resistance, so manual capture is recommended.
