The pea is a legume plant we are all familiar with, and it is also a dual-purpose crop for both vegetable and grain use, a vegetable with high economic returns and broad development prospects. So how should peas be raised from seed into seedlings? Come and take a look at the detailed introduction with the editor.

1. Choosing the site

Pea seedlings have a relatively deep root system and fairly strong drought tolerance, but they do not tolerate wet conditions, so when planting, choose neutral or slightly alkaline soil where no legume crops have been grown for 3-4 years, on higher ground, with convenient drainage and irrigation, and loose and fertile. When planting, clear the weeds from the ground thoroughly, prepare the soil, rake it fine and level it, and loosen the soil in advance, which helps the seeds germinate.

2. Sowing time

Pea seedlings tolerate cold but not heat, and the most suitable temperature for the seeds is 18-20 degrees, so basically they can be cultivated in all seasons except the high-temperature period in summer. In the south, spring sowing and autumn sowing are generally adopted; spring sowing is generally carried out in February-March, and autumn sowing is generally carried out in September-October, while in warm areas sowing can be carried out in October or January of the following year.

3. Sowing

Before sowing, apply base fertilizer; generally apply 1500 kg of decomposed farmyard manure, 30 kg of superphosphate, and 10 kg of potassium chloride per mu, and after raking fine and leveling, make beds 1.5 m wide. Sowing uses the dibbling method, opening holes on the bed surface at a plant-row spacing of 40×15 cm, sowing 5-6 seeds per hole, generally using 10-12 kg of seed per mu. After sowing, cover with soil and water, keeping the soil moist; under suitable temperature conditions, seedlings will emerge before long, and when the seedlings grow to 8-10 cm with 2-4 true leaves, they can be transplanted.

4. Strengthening management

After transplanting, topdress twice, mainly with quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer; each time before topdressing, dilute it with water before applying, so that the fertilizer is not too concentrated and does not harm the seedlings. Pea seedlings are also harmed by waterlogging, so after rain, clear the ditches and drain promptly to avoid root rot and dead seedlings, and in long droughts, water to keep the soil moist. During the seedling stage, carry out appropriate intertillage to promote seedling growth, and after rain and after fertilizing, earth up appropriately, while also paying attention to weeding and guiding the vines. Take care with the prevention and control of pests and diseases; common diseases include powdery mildew, yellow spot disease, and yellow top disease, which can be controlled by spraying with thiophanate-methyl, carbendazim, and chlorothalonil.
