How to Grow Water Spinach Hydroponically? A Detailed Guide to the Latest Planting Method
Water spinach is a vegetable that people quite like, especially in summer when it comes onto the market in large quantities. Because water spinach is highly adaptable, both sowing and cuttings work normally, and it grows again after one harvest, just like chives, so many people grow water spinach at home, but soil is troublesome to handle. In fact, water spinach can be grown hydroponically, so how do you grow water spinach hydroponically? Let's find out together.
1. Seed germination
The seed coat of water spinach is relatively thick and hard, so if sown directly, it germinates extremely slowly. Therefore, before sowing, it must be germinated to ensure yield. The seeds can be soaked in warm water at about 30 degrees for about 20 hours; after they have absorbed enough water, take them out, rinse them several times with clean water, and then germinate them. For germination, wrap the soaked seeds in a cloth bag or gauze, keep the germination environment at about 25 degrees, open it once a day and rinse with clean water. When more than half of the seeds show white and split open, they can be sown.
2. Sowing
For sowing, choose a relatively large flower pot. Water it thoroughly once before sowing, then evenly scatter the germinated seeds in the pot and cover with 1-2 cm of soil. After sowing, spray water frequently to keep the soil moist, and at the same time maintain a reasonable temperature to promote the seedlings' emergence from the soil.
3. Planting
For the planting container, you can choose a bucket, basin, water tank or other container. Foam board can be used as a floating mat, and sponge, wheat straw and the like can be used to secure the seedlings. When the seedlings break through the soil and grow to 4-5 leaves, they can be transplanted. When transplanting, cut holes in the floating mat, plant 2-3 seedlings in each hole, then secure the seedlings with sponge so they float on the water surface. Water spinach growth cannot do without fertilizer, so an appropriate amount of nitrogen fertilizer or organic fertilizer can be added to the water to make it grow vigorously.
4. Harvesting
Water spinach can be harvested multiple times. Generally, when it grows to about 30 cm, it can be picked. For the first harvest, leave two nodes at the base, which can promote the sprouting of side vines. Every subsequent harvest is the same; do not leave too many nodes, as this will cause too many side vines to sprout, consume a large amount of nutrients, and disperse the nutrition, affecting quality and yield. After each harvest, fertilize once.
