Wuta-tsai, also known as tatsoi or tadi-song, is a variety of Chinese cabbage. Its vitamin C content is extremely high, so it is also called the vitamin vegetable. It is itself extremely cold-hardy and can keep growing at low temperatures of minus ten-odd degrees Celsius. So how should wuta-tsai be grown? Let's find out together.

1. Soil Selection

To grow wuta-tsai well, it is best to choose loose, fertile soil. After selecting the site, deep plow and expose it to the sun to kill insect eggs and pathogens in the soil and ensure the seedlings grow smoothly. Apply 1000-1500 kg of farmyard manure per mu as base fertilizer, then after one fine plowing, prepare the land and make beds about 1.5-2 m wide.

2. Sowing and Raising Seedlings

Before sowing, first put the seeds in clean water for one hour, take them out and place them in a cool place to dry in the shade. After the moisture has evaporated, choose a suitable time for sowing. Before sowing, first water to preserve warmth. Drilling or broadcasting may be used for sowing. At suitable temperatures, seedlings usually emerge in 3-5 days. Depending on the sowing season, the sowing rate per mu also differs. Generally, for autumn sowing, about 0.75-1 kg of seed is used per mu, while for spring and summer sowing, about 1.5-2.5 kg is used. After the seedlings emerge, thin them in time, keep suitable row spacing, promote seedling growth, and do a good job of weeding at the same time.

3. Transplanting

Generally, about 30 days after sowing, when the seedlings have grown 6-7 leaves, they are transplanted. At transplanting, water thoroughly once to make it easier to lift the seedlings, and after lifting them, complete the transplanting within a short time. For planting, a spacing of 25-33 cm square is generally suitable, but the planting spacing between plants and rows can also be determined according to the local climate, soil fertility, and seedling growth. After transplanting, water in time so the plants can recover slowly.

4. Fertilizer and Water Management

The root system of wuta-tsai is rather shallow and its absorption capacity is weak, so during the growing period, fertilizer and water must be supplied continuously. Quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer should be applied as a top dressing many times; this is the main link in speeding up growth and ensuring high yield and good quality. Within 3-5 days after transplanting, water must not be cut off. After transplanting, apply dilute manure water many times, generally once every 3-4 days, to promote the seedlings to root and survive as quickly as possible. After the seedlings turn green, apply thicker manure water, and cultivate the soil in time when new leaves appear to promote root growth. The fertilization principle is to water on seedlings on sunny mornings or evenings, with a lower concentration, while on cloudy days apply in bands between the rows, with a lower concentration and fewer times.
