How to manage hyacinth beans during the flowering and podding stage? A detailed explanation of the latest management points
The flowering period of hyacinth beans is precisely the critical period for pollination and fruit setting. Management during this period is extremely important. During the flowering period, a large amount of nutrients is consumed, and the demand for fertilizer is relatively high. So how should hyacinth beans be managed during the flowering period? How should fertilizer be applied? Let's learn about it together.
1. Temperature management
At this stage, the room temperature should be kept appropriate to avoid excessively high or low temperatures, as both are unfavorable for the flowering and podding of hyacinth beans. The suitable temperature is between 16-27 degrees, with 18-25 degrees being optimal. Below 15 degrees or above 28 degrees will affect flowering and podding and will also cause serious flower and pod drop. In particular, when the temperature is above 32 degrees, it will not only cause a large number of flowers and pods to drop, but also seriously affect the quality of the tender pods. Therefore, when the temperature exceeds 28 degrees, ventilation should be strengthened to lower the temperature, or water mist should be sprayed to increase air humidity and lower the temperature.
2. Fertilizer and water management
Hyacinth beans should not be watered or topdressed before the early flowering stage and pod-setting stage. Only after pods have set can watering and fertilization begin. Under conditions with plastic mulch, the method of subsurface irrigation under the mulch can be adopted, and quick-acting nitrogen fertilizer or decomposed human manure and urine can be applied with the water to promote pod growth. Hyacinth beans prefer nitrate nitrogen and do not like ammoniacal nitrogen. Ammoniacal nitrogen fertilizer will inhibit their growth and development, so urea or human manure and urine are mostly used for topdressing. During the podding stage of the lower inflorescences, water and fertilize generally once every half month, applying about 10 kg of ternary compound fertilizer per mu each time, or 100 kg of human manure and urine. During the podding stage of the middle inflorescences, water and fertilize generally once every 8-10 days, applying 7-8 kg of urea per mu each time. During the podding stage of the upper inflorescences, water and fertilize generally once every 10 days, applying 5 kg each of urea and potassium sulfate per mu each time.
3. Harvesting
Hyacinth beans grow longer and heavier half a month after flowering. At this time, their commercial value is extremely high, making it the suitable time for harvest. An inflorescence generally has more than 8-10 flower buds, but only 3-5 flowers bloom and set pods. During harvesting, care should be taken to protect these flower buds. After harvesting the first batch of pods, the retained flower buds will accelerate their development and set a second crop of pods.
