Small aromatic scallions have a strong fragrance and are a commonly used seasoning ingredient when making dishes; they can also be processed into dehydrated vegetables. Small aromatic scallions are generally a type of scallion cultivated in all four seasons, but the best planting time is in spring and autumn. At present, the planting yield is relatively good, and the market conditions are also very optimistic. They are relatively popular and are a commonly consumed household vegetable. Demand is relatively large. So what work must be done well to plant small aromatic scallions? Let us discuss it together now.

1. Site Selection and Land Preparation

Small aromatic scallions are cold-tolerant and heat-tolerant, but not drought-tolerant, so the planting site should choose soil with good water and fertilizer retention. In addition, sandy loam soil can also be chosen, requiring sloping land that receives sunlight but is not exposed to direct sunlight for a long time. It should be in a location with a good water source for convenient irrigation. Do not plant in land seriously polluted by pesticides. For the planting field, apply 1500 jin of farmyard manure per mu, as well as about 120 jin of nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer. First plow the land within 30 cm and apply fertilizer, then after cultivating the soil finely and covering it with more than 10 cm, rotary till all the soil, level the land, and build seedbeds 1.3 m wide. The main field should also be properly prepared.

2. Seed Selection and Treatment

It is best to choose varieties that bloom purple flowers or white flowers, as such varieties with a rich fragrance have high economic value. At present, such improved varieties include Sichuan small aromatic scallion and four-season rice scallion. Before sowing, the seeds must be treated. Generally, soak the seeds in hot water at 50 degrees for more than 2 minutes, stirring continuously to avoid scalding. This can disinfect and sterilize them. After taking them out and washing them clean, they can be drained and sown. Sprouting is not necessary. As long as the temperature is suitable, germination is easy.

3. Planting at the Appropriate Time

Before sowing, water the seedbed thoroughly, then directly broadcast the seeds. Generally, sow 6 grams of seeds per sq m of seedbed, and it is also possible to sow slightly less or more. The seeds are relatively fine, so cover with soil less than 1 cm deep, which will not affect emergence. After covering with soil, watering is still needed to keep the seeds combined with the soil. After that, straw or rice straw can be covered to keep warm and retain moisture. Generally, cover with only a thin layer; covering too much makes disease prone to occur. After emergence, select the seedlings, remove weak, diseased, and underdeveloped seedlings, then trim the fibrous roots and plant them in the main field, with a plant spacing of 8 to 10 cm and a row spacing of 15 to 20 cm, planting about 3 plants per hole, with a planting depth of 3 to 4 cm.

4. Management After Planting

After planting, because there are no roots, water once every day to ensure the survival of the seedlings. After about 1 week, some roots will grow back, and watering can be done once every three days to encourage the seedlings to take root. At about half a month, when the seedlings have recovered and are growing normally and the root system is normal, water depending on whether the soil is dry, with no fixed watering schedule. Topdressing should be done once one month after planting, applied together with watering, and afterward topdressing can be done once a month.

To plant small aromatic scallions, you must start from site selection and seed selection, and in between must go through procedures such as land preparation, seed treatment, and sowing. In the later stage, you must do a good job in the maintenance and management work throughout the entire growth period, and must always ensure the supply of water and nutrients. Such is the entire operation process.
