Winter melon is a dish that many people enjoy eating, and it has excellent market prospects. To achieve high quality and high yield of winter melon, doing a good job of fertilizer and water management is extremely important. So how should fertilizer and water management be carried out for winter melon? Let's find out together.

1. Apply sufficient base fertilizer

Before planting, first, when building the beds and preparing the soil, open a long trench in the middle of the bed and bury the base fertilizer. Generally, apply 2000-3000 kg of decomposed organic fertilizer or farmyard manure and 50 kg of superphosphate per mu. The base fertilizer has a slow effect and can provide sufficient nutrients for the entire growth period of winter melon.

2. Root topdressing

Root fertilization can be divided into three stages: seedling-promoting fertilizer, vine-forcing fertilizer, and fruit-swelling fertilizer. The seedling-promoting fertilizer is applied when the seedlings begin to grow new roots after transplanting, mainly nitrogen fertilizer, generally applied with irrigation water to reduce the concentration and avoid burning the roots, usually 8-10 kg of urea per mu. The vine-forcing stage is the period of fastest growth for winter melon plants. At this time, apply 20-25 kg of compound fertilizer per mu to promote rapid stem and vine growth and lay the foundation for later flowering and fruit setting. After fruit setting, topdressing should also be done in time. At this time, topdressing should be mainly phosphorus and potassium fertilizer, and nitrogen fertilizer application should be controlled to avoid excessive vegetative growth of the plants, which is bad for the expansion of young fruits.

3. Foliar fertilization

Starting from after the seedlings are transplanted and survive, spray the leaves with a mixture of 800-1000 times dilution of "Hai Zhuangyuan 818" Plant Guardian and 800 times dilution of "Hai Zhuangyuan 818" broad-spectrum foliar fertilizer per mu, spraying once every 7-10 days; spray 800-1000 times dilution of "Hai Zhuangyuan 818" once each before flowering and at full flowering stage to promote flowering and fruit setting. When the young fruits are swelling, spray a high-potassium fertilizer solution, and at the same time pay attention to maintaining calcium and boron elements to improve yield and quality.

4. Water management

The fruit-swelling stage of winter melon has a large demand for nutrients and is a key period for fertilization. It is also the period with the greatest water demand. To ensure that fertilizer and water are sufficient and smoothly transport nutrients to the fruit, the soil must be kept moist and must not suffer drought, reducing deformed fruits and cracked fruits and improving commercial value.
