Eggplant is highly prone to damping-off during the seedling stage. This disease, which occurs very easily during the eggplant seedling stage, is an important part of the eggplant seedling-growing process and is of great significance for increasing yield. So how should damping-off in eggplant seedlings be controlled? Let's take a look.

1. Disease symptoms

Eggplant damping-off generally occurs in the early seedling stage. In many cases, the seeds rot before they even emerge from the soil, and after emergence the cotyledons and true leaves are also damaged, causing damping-off. After the seedlings become diseased, yellow-green water-soaked lesions appear at the base of the stem, as if scalded by boiling water, and they quickly turn yellow-brown and encircle the stem. The diseased area gradually becomes dry and rotten and sunken, and the water-soaked symptoms gradually spread outward, eventually causing the seedlings to topple over onto the ground, wilt and lose water, and then dry up and die. In the early stage of the disease, as long as a small number of seedlings in the field are diseased, after a few days they will spread outward from that point as a center, eventually causing patches of wheat seedlings to damp off. When humidity is high, white cottony mycelium also grows on the surface of the diseased seedlings and on the nearby soil surface.

2. Disease pattern

The pathogen overwinters in diseased plant debris and soil. Under suitable conditions, it spreads to the wheat seedlings via wind, rain and irrigation, invading from the base of the seedling stem, with an incubation period of 1-2 days. The pathogen can grow under both high-temperature and low-temperature conditions, so when the seedbed temperature is too low, the wheat seedlings grow slowly; under high-temperature conditions, the susceptible period is prolonged and damping-off is very likely to occur. This is especially true during continuous rainy weather, when insufficient light makes the wheat seedlings grow weakly and the disease becomes more severe.

3. Control methods

Strengthen seedling-stage management, avoid low-temperature and high-humidity environments, and do not water during rainy days. Choose varieties with strong disease resistance according to local requirements. Before sowing, treat seeds and soil with chemicals to prevent damping-off. The seedbed should be selected as a plot with high, dry terrain, sheltered from wind and facing the sun, with good drainage and loose, fertile soil. To avoid bringing the pathogen into the seedbed, farmyard manure should be fully decomposed before being applied, and the soil should be fully turned and sun-dried and raked level before cultivation.
