Snake gourd is an annual climbing herbaceous plant, also known as snake loofah and snake bean. Its fruit hangs down like a live snake, hence the name snake gourd, and its taste is also fairly good, so many people are quite interested in it. Now more people are growing it, so how should snake gourd be sown and raised into seedlings? Let us learn about it together.

1. Planting time

The planting time of snake gourd differs in different regions. Generally, farmers north of the Yangtze River plant it in March to April, because it is not strict about soil requirements and has fairly good adaptability, so it can grow in many environments. In order to improve yield and quality, it can be planted in fertile soil, preferably close to a water source, so that sufficient water can be provided at any time.

2. Seed germination

Snake gourd seeds are generally fairly thick, so the seeds need to be treated before planting so that they can sprout normally. First, sun-dry them to kill bacteria on the surface, then put the seeds into hot water at 50 degrees to scald them briefly. After about 2 minutes, remove them, then put them into cold water and soak for 3 days. After soaking, put the seeds in a warm environment for germination, and once the sprouts emerge, they can be planted.

3. Land preparation

When planting, prepare the land and appropriately supplement some nutrients, so the seeds can germinate well. They grow better in some fertile soils, the plants grow more robustly, and resistance is enhanced, making them less susceptible to bacterial damage. If conditions allow, it can be used together with farmyard manure, using farmyard manure as base fertilizer, so that its growth can obtain comprehensive nutrients, and in later growth it can also bear more fruits.

4. Field planting

When snake gourd seedlings grow to three leaves, they can be field planted. A certain spacing should be maintained during field planting, generally about 70 cm is enough. After field planting, water once thoroughly, and they will grow rapidly. Snake gourd grows fairly quickly, so sufficient fertilizer and water must be maintained. In June, they can be harvested, but after supplementary feeding once they mature, they can be harvested in stages. After each harvest, replenish fertilizer and water in time to supplement nutrients for the plants, promoting the ripening of the remaining fruits and fruiting again.
