Broccoli: The Latest Planting and Management Techniques Tutorial
Broccoli is a flower-head type vegetable. Although it is not native to China, it has a history of introduction and cultivation spanning many years. The techniques for cultivation and planting, including management, are quite extensive. The planting methods, the cultivation and growing process, and the final management work all actually involve certain requirements and particularities and cannot be done arbitrarily. If you would like to learn about some of these aspects, you can take a look.
1. Planting
The seeds to be planted should be treated before sowing. Soak them in a medicinal solution, then soak the seeds to promote germination before sowing. If the seeds are pre-packaged, they may have already been disinfected, so you can soak them directly. When sowing, the white sprouts should be covered with soil to prevent moisture evaporation and withering of the young sprouts. Maintaining moisture is a task that needs attention from before emergence through the seedling stage. They must not lose water. However, the seedbed should not accumulate water, as waterlogging will rot the seeds. For seedlings, the main concern is disease management; damping-off is the most likely disease to occur in seedlings. Controlling moisture is an effective way to suppress disease.
2. Cultivation
When seedlings grow to 7 to 8 cm, they can be transplanted. Transplanting should be done early rather than too late, when root growth is just right. If the seedlings are too old, many roots will be damaged when they are pulled out. Seedlings being transplanted can be planted somewhat deeper to protect root growth. They recover quickly. At this time, hardening off is generally not necessary. Pay attention to reviving the seedlings and provide water and nutrients. After growth has recovered, the main tasks are topdressing, watering, and weeding to promote growth. Do not plant too densely between rows; leave gaps for the head-forming stage of growth.
3. Management
Management includes aspects such as fertilizer and water, soil nutrients, and pests and diseases. Starting from the head-forming stage, the amount of fertilizer applied gradually needs to be increased to meet the nutritional needs of head formation. Finally, attention should be paid to the soil's nutrient supply. The soil itself has certain natural nutrient elements, but these are easily consumed as growth proceeds. Therefore, attention should be paid to supplemental fertilization, especially for some trace elements, which must not be lacking. During the growing period, some diseases are likely to occur. The common ones are downy mildew and brown spot disease. These diseases damage branches, leaves, and flower heads. They should be a key focus of prevention and control.
4. Notes
The broccoli head grows gradually. If disease damages the head during this period, the loss is relatively great. High temperature and high humidity can trigger some diseases and are disease-inducing factors. Whether growing in open fields or greenhouses, it is necessary to lower the temperature and control humidity. Drought is favorable to some insects and can cause outbreaks and damage, so prevention can be done in advance to reduce harm. During high temperature and drought, do not fertilize, fertilize less, and choose the right fertilization method.
Broccoli cultivation can cover the whole process from seed to mature head. This has separately introduced the management, adjustment, and points to note. Therefore, management should pay attention to the stages of growth. You cannot keep managing the same way throughout, or fail to complete tasks properly.
