How to Grow Radishes: Planting Methods and Timing Explained
Radish is a root vegetable that everyone enjoys eating very much, and its planting area in our country is also very large. Now it has gradually reached the planting node for autumn radishes, and many farmers have begun preparations for radish planting. However, growing radishes is not as simple as everyone imagines, so how should radishes be grown? Below, the editor brings you the planting time and methods for radishes. Let's take a look!
1. Planting Time
The planting time of radishes is mainly determined by their variety, that is, according to the season. When growing spring radishes, they are generally sown in early spring from February to March, and the growth period is about 1-2 months. If in northern high-latitude areas such as East China and North China, then sowing should be done around April. Summer radishes are generally sown in May and can be harvested in July. The most common autumn radish planting time should be decided according to the planting region. If in warmer areas such as North China and Northwest China, then sow in July-August, while in colder areas the sowing time should be in early to mid-July.
2. Land Preparation and Fertilization
⟦NL>After the previous crop in the soil is harvested, attention should be paid to doing a good job of deep plowing, breaking up the soil and raking it level, and applying sufficient base fertilizer. Then choose a suitable radish variety according to the soil conditions. If the soil is thick, then large varieties can be planted, and the deep plowing depth should be kept above 30 cm. On the contrary, if the soil layer is shallow, then small varieties should be chosen, and deep roots of 25 cm are sufficient. The root ability of radishes is relatively strong, so we need to apply sufficient base fertilizer, mainly decomposed farmyard manure, apply it into the soil, then rake level and make beds.3. Proper Thinning of Seedlings
After radish seedlings emerge, their growth speed is very fast, so the work of thinning seedlings must be done well. Based on the principle of early thinning and thinning in batches, if the thinning time is earlier, because the seedlings are relatively small, the roots of the seedlings will not be easily damaged when pulling them out. Then thinning should be done appropriately later for final spacing, to avoid missing plants due to pest damage. Under normal circumstances, thinning is generally done about 2 times. The first thinning is carried out when the first true leaf appears, removing weak seedlings, pest-damaged seedlings, and so on. Then thinning is done again when the third true leaf grows, providing sufficient growth space for strong seedlings.
4. Water and Fertilizer Management
Radishes have a very large demand for water and fertilizer. Under normal water and fertilizer management, the early growth stage of radishes should focus on promoting the growth of leaves and roots. This provides sufficient water and nutrients for the expansion of the fleshy root in the later stage of the radish. When the vegetative growth of the radish reaches a certain level, it should be properly controlled. Radishes have different water requirements at different growth stages. For example, during the germination stage, sufficient water must be ensured, while during the seedling stage, less watering should be done to promote root establishment. At no time should there be too much water, to avoid root rot causing diseases and so on.
When fertilizing, fertilization should be carried out according to the fertilizer requirements of radishes. If the base fertilizer is sufficient, then less topdressing can be done; on the contrary, more topdressing should be done. The above is a brief introduction to radish planting methods and timing.
