How to Propagate Pittosporum? A Detailed Guide to Common Pittosporum Propagation Methods
1. Sowing method
Pittosporum has its own seeds, which are inside its flesh, and the fruit ripens between October and November. The color of the ripe fruit is different from when it is unripe: the former is yellow, while the latter is green. Collecting the seeds also requires a certain method, and this method is quite simple. We just need to sun-dry the fruit we have collected, and after the fruit skin splits open, we can knock the seeds out.
After that, a certain processing method is still needed, which requires plant ash. We put it together with wet water, then scrub the seeds, and after that we can get pure seeds. Of course, the seeds also need to be stored using a certain method, and only in March can they be formally sown.
Generally speaking, the germination rate of sown seeds is not low, but it is not very high either, only around 50 percent. Because the seedlings grow very slowly, you have to wait until they have grown for a full two years before they can be formally moved into pots for planting. After that, we also need to wait until the third or fourth year before we can plant them into the nursery, and when transplanting, be sure to keep a soil ball around the roots.
2. Cutting method
The time for cuttings is in spring. At this time it is quite convenient. When new leaves are growing, we take out the young shoots needed for cuttings. However, the young shoots also have requirements: they should be one to two years old, and about 15 cm in length.
We need to cut them properly, and the next operation to take is to insert them into a wet sand bed. When taking cuttings, we must control the light intensity well; the light does not need to be too strong, diffused light is enough. Besides that, remember to keep the humidity well maintained.
Generally speaking, rooting takes about 20 days, and as for transplanting into the nursery, it takes two or three years. Normally we need to water, and also remember to fertilize; besides that, remember to prune.
