The flowers of Pittosporum tobira are small and white, very lovely, and a great helper in landscaping. With Pittosporum tobira helping to green the landscape, it can fill gardens with vitality and add a touch of brightness to the city. But if Pittosporum tobira gets sick or infested with insects, that vitality is gone, and so is the brightness. Therefore, we must take good care of it and prevent pests and diseases. To ensure they grow normally and play their role in beautifying our homes, we must first understand what pests and diseases there are, and then treat them according to the symptoms.

1. Brown spot disease

Brown spots appear on the green leaves of Pittosporum tobira. These spots come in round, oval, and irregular shapes, some large, some small; the colors range from dark brown to light brown; some leaves have one spot, while others have several spots of varying sizes. This is brown spot disease. In the later stages, brown spot disease produces small black dots in the center of the spots, which are the pathogenic fungi.

Prevention and treatment methods

First, block the pathogenic fungi at the source. When buying, check the leaves carefully and do not buy seedlings with spots; sellers should check their own seedlings at all times, and if symptoms are found, treat or destroy them promptly. After purchase, plant scientifically and care for them carefully to strengthen the Pittosporum tobira's own immunity. If spotted branches and leaves are found, remove them promptly and destroy them. Once it is confirmed that they have this disease, pesticides can also be sprayed in the correct amount and at the right time according to the proper treatment method.

2. Sooty mold

Sooty mold mainly appears on the leaves as mold-like substances resembling coal ash, covering the leaf surface so that the leaves cannot receive light, which prevents them from growing normally and ultimately causes them to wither and die.

Prevention and treatment methods

Because sooty mold mainly affects the plant's light exposure, to prevent and treat this disease, the branches and leaves should be arranged in reasonable layers, sparse and orderly, so that every leaf can bathe in sunlight; if diseased branches are found, prune and destroy them promptly.

3. Cottony cushion scale

Cottony cushion scale is a pest that looks like a spider. It severely affects the healthy growth of Pittosporum tobira, and can occur several times in a single year. It is a very stubborn and difficult-to-control pest.

Prevention and treatment methods

As with the prevention and treatment of brown spot disease, first block it at the source. When buying, check carefully and refuse to buy if pests are found; sellers should take good care of their seedlings and treat pest infestations promptly when found. If pests are found after planting, first prune the infested branches and leaves, take them out of the field and destroy them. Biological pest control can also be used by introducing vedalia beetles (Rodolia cardinalis), which love to eat cottony cushion scale; of course, chemical control can also be used.
