What are the latest control methods for garlic tip drying?
During garlic cultivation, it is common to see the phenomenon of leaf tip drying, that is, the tips of the leaves appear dry, withered and yellowed. So why do the leaves develop dried tips, and what are the different causes? When tip drying occurs, how should it be handled? What cultivation work should be done before planting to prevent tip drying? Let's take a look together below.
1. Causes
During the rotten mother period, nutrient supply is uneven, and yellow leaves and dried tips appear; the nutrients of the garlic mother are used up in the early stage. It may also be caused by malnutrition or nutrient deficiency: with magnesium deficiency, old leaves lose their green color and the leaf tips gradually die; with boron deficiency, new leaves yellow and the leaves gradually die; with calcium deficiency, the leaves bend downward and the leaf tips die. Too high a temperature causes evaporation and dried tips, and freezing damage causes dried tips; high humidity or drought may also cause it. Using too much chemical fertilizer and damage from toxic gases. Disease effects, such as leaf blight and late blight, and pest damage, such as garlic maggots.
2. Nutrient adjustment
Note that during the rotten mother period, appropriate topdressing can be done, using farmyard manure leachate diluted with water, which must not harm the young roots. In the later stage, nitrogen fertilizer needs to be supplemented, while in the early and middle stages, phosphorus and potassium fertilizers are supplemented. Use sufficient farmyard manure as base fertilizer. After emergence and once the nutrients of the garlic mother are used up, the subsequent differentiation requires timely topdressing with quick-acting compound fertilizer. Throughout the entire growth period, spray trace element fertilizer at any time.
3. Temperature and humidity
Avoid excessively high temperatures. When planting in autumn and winter, if there is high temperature, it needs to be adjusted by controlling water, watering a small amount at a time and doing so multiple times. It is best to set up shade netting; shading can prevent water from evaporating too quickly and avoid water loss and dried tips. If there is heavy rain, soil moisture will definitely increase immediately, so humidity must be reduced quickly and drainage should be cleared. In dry seasons, water more in the evening. In winter, pay attention to keeping warm and preventing freezing damage.
4. Other hazards
Generally, it is necessary to prevent leaf blight and late blight. Both of these diseases can cause leaf yellowing; in particular, leaf blight starts from the leaf tips. There are also some other diseases. Plant disease-resistant varieties and cultivate strong seedlings. Carry out crop rotation to reduce disease. Prevent garlic maggots; feeding underground will cause yellowing above ground. Use beta-cypermethrin for root drenching. Pay attention to using more farmyard manure and less chemical fertilizer. Plant in places with no factory pollution nearby.
Garlic tip drying is a common situation, with complex causes and differing conditions. Only after determining the cause can correct treatment be carried out promptly and effectively to improve the symptoms.
