What to do about corn staying green and maturing late? The latest solutions are here
During corn cultivation, you may sometimes notice corn staying green or regreening. Although it should already be the maturity season, the plant stems and leaves are still lush and green, as if they have no intention of maturing. Generally, when this happens, it is abnormal growth, so what exactly causes this situation, and what should be done?
1. Causes of staying green
Corn staying green is generally caused by sowing and planting too late, which delays development at the seedling stage. Or it may be nutritional imbalance, for example, if the carbon-to-nitrogen ratio is too small, it will affect growth and development. Sometimes vegetative growth is too vigorous, so the plant enters reproductive growth late, grows excessively, tassels late, and its growth is delayed. The above are the main causes, but other causes cannot be ruled out.
2. Promote development
Use a small amount of nitrogen plus phosphate fertilizer as seed fertilizer, loosen the soil after sowing, and after jointing begins, water and fertilizer are needed to promote seedling stem elongation and growth. Soil loosening should be done when about a few true leaves have grown. This can improve the soil environment, promote root growth, and benefit microbial activity. This is favorable for corn growth and can promote early development.
3. Auxiliary measures
Remove the empty stalks in the field, or small plants, those that do not bear corn, or those with very small corn, to avoid nutrient consumption and also increase ventilation and light penetration. Ensure sufficient pollination; after complete artificial pollination, the remaining tassels can be removed. After the female ears silk, the husk leaves need to be cut off, which can promote silking. Be careful to remove ineffective ears.
4. Weeding and topdressing
During the grain-filling period, loosen the soil and weed, cut some roots, promote soil aeration, and increase temperature. This can promote early maturity, but do not cut all the roots, because if the sources of nutrients and water are shortened, the plant will die. If it is not dry, do not water; this can also prevent staying green. Apply topdressing during the silking period, about 200 jin of chemical fertilizer per mu. As long as the corn is growing well, do not fertilize again later, as it is easy for it to stay green.
Corn often tends to stay green and mature late, affecting quality and delaying harvest. Therefore, in cultivation and management, some measures can be used to avoid staying green.
