Latest Tips for Safe Overwintering of Autumn Spinach
Autumn spinach is an overwintering vegetable sown in autumn and harvested in spring. It generally begins overwintering at the end of November and turns green again in early March of the following year, lasting more than 100 days. Therefore, under long-term low-temperature conditions, how to ensure the safe overwintering of spinach is the key to achieving a high yield. So how should autumn spinach be managed during overwintering? Let's find out together.
1. Water the freezing water well
When watering autumn spinach with freezing water, you must achieve "one certainty" and "two suitability". One certainty means deciding whether to water the freezing water according to the soil moisture content. Generally, when the moisture content of sandy loam is below 15%, loam is below 17%, and clay is below 20%, the freezing water should be watered. Two suitability means watering the freezing water at the right time and in the right amount. The time for watering the freezing water should be when the soil plough layer can thaw during the day and freeze at night. Watering in the right amount also means the amount of freezing water should not be too much or too little, and it is suitable to connect with the subsoil moisture.
2. Apply overwintering fertilizer well
⟦NL>Topdressing overwintering fertilizer can increase the nutrient content of the soil, serve the purpose of using winter fertilizer in spring, and promote weak seedlings to become strong. It is especially important for vegetable plots with little base fertilizer, poor soil fertility, and weak seedling growth. Therefore, overwintering fertilizer should be applied together with the freezing water. Generally, 10 kg of urea or 20 kg of ammonium sulfate per mu should be applied with the water.
3. Covering materials for cold protection
The low temperatures during the severe cold period in northern regions are extremely unfavorable for spinach seedlings overwintering, so measures of covering with materials for cold protection should be adopted to increase soil temperature and ensure the safe overwintering of seedlings. Covering can generally be carried out after the soil in the plough layer is completely frozen. The covering material can be farmyard manure rich in organic matter and crushed and finely broken, and about 1000 kg per mu can be spread.
