Cabbage is very common in China and is a vegetable with very high market demand in our country. Moreover, it is not only a vegetable but can also be used as feed, and its planting area in China is very extensive. The planting time for cabbage varies; under normal circumstances, it can be planted in all four seasons. So as temperatures gradually drop and autumn arrives, how should cabbage be planted in the open field? Below, the editor brings you the open-field cabbage planting techniques for autumn. Let's take a look!

1. Sowing and Raising Seedlings

Before sowing, first choose a plot that is cool, has high soil fertility, and has normal drainage and irrigation. The previous crop on the plot should not be a non-cruciferous crop. After removing the previous crop's straw and weeds, plow and sun the soil, then apply sufficient farmyard manure. Water before sowing to keep the soil moist, then cover the seeds with a layer of fine soil. The sowing rate per mu should be controlled at about 50g. After sowing, pay attention to setting up a shade net to avoid excessive temperature causing water to evaporate too quickly. After the seedlings emerge, the shade net can be removed and a shade shed can be set up.

2. Reasonable Seedling Separation

When the seedlings have grown about two true leaves, do a good job of seedling separation. During seedling separation, transplant in grades according to large, medium, and small order. Before seedling separation, the seedling separation site should also be applied with sufficient decomposed farmyard manure. The transplanting row spacing should be controlled at about 10*10cm for temporary planting. Water appropriately when transplanting seedlings. After planting, provide appropriate shading and do a good job of watering. If using nutrient pots or nutrient blocks for seedling separation, then after the seedlings survive, promptly uncover the shading materials. Reasonable seedling separation can improve the growth ability of the seedlings and is very beneficial to later head formation and stress resistance.

3. Water and Fertilizer Management

After sowing, if the weather is relatively dry and there is little rain, then water about once every two days or so. The watering method is generally mainly furrow irrigation in the field, allowing water to seep into the field better and prompting the seedlings to emerge. For newly emerged seedlings, on sunny days, water appropriately once every morning. Then adjust the watering amount appropriately according to the actual conditions of the soil and weather. After rain, do a good job of drainage to prevent the seedlings from becoming leggy. During the seedling stage, also apply topdressing appropriately twice, mainly with decomposed farmyard manure as the fertilizer type.

4. Field Management

Throughout the entire growth period of cabbage, the number of topdressings should be maintained at about 4 times. They are generally carried out at the seedling recovery, rosette, and early and late head formation stages. Among these, special attention should be paid to topdressing at the early head formation stage. The concentration and amount of topdressing should be appropriately increased with the growth amount of the plant. And the fertilizer concentration should also be controlled according to weather changes. In dry weather, light fertilizer should be the main type. Then from the early growth stage to the late growth stage of cabbage, cultivate about twice, which can improve the soil's moisture conservation capacity and promote root growth.
