Garlic prefers a cool and cold climate. Open-field autumn-sown garlic is generally sown from late September to early October, when the temperature is suitable for its emergence. It generally takes about 40-45 days from sowing to 4-6 leaves. If sown too early, the seedlings are prone to freezing damage; if sown too late, due to the influence of high temperatures later on, the production period is shortened, the yield is low, and the quality is poor. Now let's take a look at the autumn garlic cultivation tips with the editor.

1. Land preparation and fertilization

The garlic root is a fibrous root without a main root. Its root group is mainly distributed in the 10-25 cm soil layer, belonging to a shallow root system, with fewer root hairs and weak absorption capacity. It is suitable for growing in loose, fertile, breathable, neutral or slightly acidic soil with strong water and fertilizer retention, and it should not be continuously cropped with onion and garlic vegetables. Before planting, first apply sufficient base fertilizer. The base fertilizer is preferably fully decomposed organic fertilizer, generally 4000-5000 kg per mu. After spreading, deeply plow the soil 20-30 cm. Then rake it level and make beds.

2. Timely sowing

Before sowing, first select seeds. Choose large cloves with large bulbs, hard cloves, fresh color, and no disease or damage as seeds. To prevent pests and diseases, treat the seeds with chemicals or soak them before sowing. Sowing can be divided into furrow sowing or hole sowing. The sowing depth should be kept at about 5-6 cm, and after sowing, the top of the clove should be covered with 2-3 cm of soil. Planting density varies by variety. Generally, 30,000-35,000 plants are planted per mu, with a plant spacing controlled at about 8-9 cm and a row spacing of about 20 cm. Although proper density can increase yield, planting too densely not only uses a large amount of seed but also leads to small garlic bulbs and low commercial grade, so within the appropriate dense planting range, varieties with small bulbs can be planted densely, and varieties with large bulbs can be planted appropriately sparsely.

3. Management before overwintering

Under suitable climate conditions, garlic generally emerges about one week after sowing. During the seedling stage, watering should be controlled, especially for plastic-film mulching, where one watering can ensure full emergence. During the emergence stage, check the seedlings frequently. After emergence, break the film promptly to avoid burning the seedlings under high temperature beneath the film. If the base fertilizer is insufficient, one seedling-promoting fertilizer application is needed one month after emergence to promote seedling growth; if the base fertilizer is sufficient, no additional fertilization is needed. Before the soil freezes, water once with freezing water to help it overwinter safely.
