Water bamboo is a common aquatic vegetable in our daily life, and its market demand in our country is very large. Therefore, more and more people are now growing water bamboo, but growing water bamboo is not as simple as it seems. Before planting, we must first clearly understand the growth process of water bamboo, and then carry out management work according to the growth process. So what is the growth process of water bamboo like? Let's take a look together with the editor below!

1. Germination stage

Every spring, when the temperature gradually rises to about 5°C, the aboveground parts and underground stems of overwintering water bamboo begin to grow from their dormant period. The germination stage of water bamboo lasts about 25 days. At this time, the growth nutrition of the tiller buds of the underground stems and the tiller buds of the aboveground stems mainly depends on the stored nutrients of the mother water bamboo plant. Therefore, after harvesting water bamboo in autumn, we should strengthen management in time and increase the nutrient storage in the underground parts, which is very beneficial to the germination of the plants in the following spring. This period is the earliest germination stage of water bamboo and is very critical to the yield and quality of water bamboo.

2. Tillering stage

When new water bamboo seedlings begin to grow new leaves, more than half of the new seedlings have already grown to normal plant height and have stability and individual plant characteristics. They will also produce two rounds of tillering at the base of each plant. The growth rate of new plants is relatively slow in the early stage, but will begin to accelerate over time. The water bamboo at this stage will differ depending on the variety of water bamboo and the number of planting years. If it is single-crop water bamboo, then the time is about 5 months. If it is double-crop water bamboo, then in the year of harvest, the time will increase by about 20 days, while for harvest in the second summer, it is only about 70 days.

3. Rooting and leafing stage

After water bamboo germinates each spring, plants with a certain leaf age will begin to produce fibrous roots at the base of the tillers and ramets. Both the tiller seedlings and the left and right node positions of the underground stems have the potential to produce roots. Leaves also begin to grow after germination. When the temperature reaches about 15°C, the rate of leaf emergence accelerates, generally reaching its peak one month before swelling. After entering the swelling stage, new leaves stop growing. If it is autumn water bamboo, then the leaf age is about 25 leaves, while summer water bamboo has only about 10 leaves. As new leaves emerge and old leaves wither, the number of new leaves per plant is generally only about 6-7.

4. Swelling stage

The swelling stage refers to the period from when the water bamboo plant stops growing taller and the new leaves begin to shorten until harvest. During the swelling stage, the water bamboo plant generally forms about 20 nodes of fleshy stem. In the early part of the swelling stage, the pseudostem becomes flat. After about four days, the pseudostem begins to expand, and then the sheathing leaf bases are pushed open, gradually exposing the water bamboo flesh. At this time, it reaches the suitable harvest period for water bamboo. If it is not harvested in time, it will gradually turn green and age. During the swelling stage, we should control the temperature well according to the planting season. A slightly lower temperature for autumn water bamboo will not affect swelling, but if the temperature for summer water bamboo exceeds 30°C, swelling will stop immediately. Therefore, everyone should pay close attention.
