Onions can be divided into autumn planting and spring planting depending on the transplanting time and growing region. South of Beijing, autumn planting is predominant, while north of Beijing, spring planting is predominant. Plastic mulch technology is mostly used when transplanting onions. So how should mulched onions be managed after transplanting? Follow along with us and take a look.

1. Transplanting Time

In southern regions, autumn planting is mostly used, generally transplanting about 40 days before the arrival of severe cold, so that the onion root system resumes growth and the leaves grow rapidly after turning green. The seedling growth period is long, so the yield is higher than that of spring planting. In northern regions, winters are severe and onions grown in the open field can hardly survive, so spring planting is predominant. In principle, spring transplanting should be early, carried out as early as possible after the soil thaws, in order to gain a longer growing period, grow more leaves during the bulb swelling stage, and increase the yield.

2. Fertilizing and Making Beds

Onion is a crop that loves fertilizer. A deficiency in any one of nitrogen, phosphorus or potassium may lead to reduced yield. Therefore, to achieve high yield and quality, sufficient base fertilizer must be applied before transplanting. Generally, apply 50 kg of high-nitrogen-phosphorus-potassium compound fertilizer and 5000 kg of decomposed farmyard manure per mu, spread them evenly on the bed surface, then plow, loosen and harrow finely, and make beds 100-120 cm wide.

3. Selecting Strong Seedlings

Before transplanting, it is best to choose seedlings aged 50 to 55 days, as such seedlings root very easily after transplanting and recover growth quickly. 10-15 days before transplanting, spray them with potassium dihydrogen phosphate foliar fertilizer, which can promote early rooting and vigorous growth after transplanting.

4. Covering with Plastic Mulch

Plastic mulch covering can enhance the onion's cold resistance for overwintering, improve the soil's water and fertilizer retention capacity, and greatly increase onion yield. Before covering with mulch, first irrigate sufficiently to build up soil moisture. After the water in the bed has completely seeped in, spray herbicide once, then cover with plastic mulch. Choose windless weather for covering the mulch, and press down both sides of the mulch with clods of soil; otherwise the mulch may be damaged by wind, and it is also not conducive to field operations.
