Yellow chives are blanched chives produced when common chives are cultivated with methods such as earthing up and light-blocking covers, causing them to soften and turn yellow in a dark environment. They not only taste better than common chives, but their price is also several times that of common chives. So how should yellow chives be cultivated? Follow along with the editor to take a look at the cultivation and management techniques for yellow chives.

1. Variety selection

There are quite a lot of yellow chive varieties. According to maturity time, they can be divided into early-maturing varieties, mid-maturing varieties and late-maturing varieties. Therefore, before choosing to cultivate yellow chives, you must first understand their yield, growth speed and disease resistance, then choose the variety suitable for your own cultivation according to local conditions and your own management ability.

2. Deep plowing and land preparation

First, the soil must be deeply plowed. Yellow chives can be planted once and harvested for many years, so before planting the soil needs to be deeply plowed. Only in this way can the root system of yellow chives grow downward during the growth process, laying a solid foundation for future harvests. Second, sandy soil should be chosen. Yellow chives have relatively high requirements for the cultivation soil, and they are best cultivated in soft, sandy soil, which is beneficial for irrigation and spraying as well as for looseness and air permeability, and is of great help to the growth and development of yellow chives. Third, trenches should be opened and beds made, which is for the convenience of drainage and irrigation. In plots with higher terrain, a drainage ditch can be opened in the center to facilitate drainage.

3. Sowing

Yellow chives can be sown directly or raised as seedlings and then transplanted. March to April or September to October each year is the planting time for yellow chives. For direct sowing, first spread a layer of fine sand on the leveled plot, then evenly broadcast the seeds in the trenches, generally using 2 kg of seed per mu, with row spacing of about 30 cm, and after sowing spread another layer of fine sand. After that, decomposed farmyard manure can be applied as fertilizer. If organic fertilizer or farmyard manure is insufficient, compound fertilizer can be used instead. The second method is transplanting. The trench spacing is also 30 cm. Plant the prepared seedlings directly, and put soil mixed with fertilizer into the trenches to earth up the young plants.

4. Building a greenhouse

During the cultivation of yellow chives, light must be blocked. If light is not blocked properly, they will turn into common chives, so if you choose greenhouse cultivation, you can directly shade the outside of the greenhouse. If cultivating in the open field, you can build a shade greenhouse with bamboo poles and opaque plastic, and then control the temperature and humidity inside the shed well. It is best to keep the temperature inside the shed at 25 degrees; if conditions are relatively simple, keeping it at 15-25 degrees is also feasible.

5. Fertilizer and water management

The growth of yellow chives has relatively high requirements for fertilizer and water. If fertilizer and water management is improper, it will directly affect later returns. For fertilizer and water management of yellow chives, remember the principle of “need water but do not retain water, use plenty of fertilizer but do not overdo it”. This means that during the growth of yellow chives, irrigation should be timely, but they must never be flooded and suffer waterlogging. During the growth of yellow chives, a large amount of nitrogen fertilizer is needed, and calcium fertilizer should also be maintained appropriately. When fertilizing, choose a method of applying small amounts many times.
